Zeppo never got a chance to show what he could do in the movies, but once he played Groucho's part for a couple weeks onstage before anyone noticed. Also, the illusion that Groucho made up so much material on the spot was just that: illusion. All of the best Marx Bros. work was carefully written and honed, even the You Bet Your Life TV show. Before shooting Night at the Opera and Day at the Races they toured the show onstage across America first. They didn't do that with the later movies and you can tell the difference in quality.
