scriptorum: I believe patterns are useful because humans are stupid, so what we call order is that of nature we successfully apply patterns to, and chaos is that which we fail to discriminate a pattern of repetition. Given these definitions, chaos is neither an illusion nor "complex order," neither is order less illusional. The universe, in a sense, is a single, non-repeating pattern in and of itself, it is what it is -- making it ordered exactly as it is, as the universe, as it should be, which is both the most complicated thing to be (unless you think there's something bigger than the universe) and the simplest: existence. The universe is order and chaos simultaneously, so your question is moot, merely a sad attempt by human consciousness to map what it observes to within the limited structure of the brain. Chaos, in turn, becomes order when viewed from a significant distance. For example, the rather chaotic pattern of stars in the sky, when viewed from a great distance, turns into a spiral galaxy. Which in turn, viewed from a greater distance, looks like a clump of galaxies with no particular order. Then viewed from an even greater distance, looks like specific clusters of galaxies with some sense of order.
