¿Question #162?
Debate: Why are there so few female gamers?

pricero1: Take a look at male gamers and then draw your own conclusions.
oldhoss: There are plenty.
Dizzy_Drizzit: Chemistry has the answer! High activation energy and low amounts of energy added in a person to person basis. On a sociological scale, the reaction while it is Exothermic odd geometries make it very slow. Sociological catalysts would help the most. More research needed.
twinfreak: just because you don't know any women, it doesn't mean they don't exist
callow: Hygeine.
Caerid: There are plenty. Its just that many of the male gamers lack social graces that are inviting to the fairer sex. Stop being a creeper and the ladies will stick around.
wizalou: they don't like to sit and think strategy.
bcooperok: Natural Selection
Woelf: Far too many are taught at a young age that being (physically) beautiful is more important than being intelligent. Thus, any pastimes that require thinking are for nerds, dorks, geeks, etc., and since none of those terms are typically associated with attractiveness they are actively avoided.
Randy Cox: Because then they'd have to hang out with dork guys.
DeePee: Because most geeks are big and sweaty and smelly.
anarchy: My gamer wife says "Well, man, that's a tough one. Are you typing everything I'm saying... stop it, honey, stop it. Knock it off! I'll figure out something better to say. Erase that, please. Honey, I swear... *shove*"
J.L.Robert: Because they have to put up with the crap shebby's had to deal with in the General Forums.
vandemonium: Vast left wing conspiracy. Shhhhh.
GrimJester: rectal
theredwagoneer: Maybe there are lots, and they only play with eachother, so we'll never know.
Simon Mueller: Due to male gamers.
kingofthegrill: social stereotypes about our hobby
Wibblenut: Cos TV requires less concentration
MotUfan: Because men typically have a more competitive attitude than women when playing games, and it makes them not want to play. Plus, many gamers need to take a more keen interest in good hygiene. Some men can put up with an oily, stinky gamer, women typically won't.
DHEK: Because many of them are interested in other things? Kinda like maybe asking why so few males into cross-stitching or something like that.
aleo09: don't know
monkeyrobot: They don´t like games
SanguinousRex: Because they're too busy playing with their boobs. I know I would be.
rootbeer: Two words: "Lightning bolt!"
cluegirl: i know,...but the ones that exsist are toooo cool!!!
buffalospynovel: I don't think there are so few. Women have many other ways to bond with people other than through competition and probably just don't identify as strongly with the term 'gamer' or your definition of it.
vetinari7878: Because of all the male gamers.
yoacusna: Because there are so few female gamers. Vicious circle, you see.
MaksimSmelchak: Poor hygienic habits among certain cross sections of the gaming population drive off the "fairer sex." Just a guess...
wargamer66: My girlfriend games and would probably whup your ass in just about anything. Eat your hearts out.
WildBil: Women (generally) are more practical with their time. Men aren't. Maybe it's a retained trait from our hunter-gatherer roots.
Helenoftroy: Not really sure but I'm still here. I think its because we are asked a million times if we need any help when we are at gaming or comic book stores as though we are lost.
imaraggamuffin: because we prefer to get our hair and nails done and talk about why guys game so much =)
vampywife: hmmm...tough one....it could be 1) the few of us who enjoy games are the next evolutionary phase that most women we passed over for, 2) if there were too many of us, no housework would get done, or 3) the others are afraid to intimidate the guys so they claim disinterest. i'm particularly fond of option 1.
Cromaa: I wish I knew....then again I'm only looking for one...one special one to spend the rest of my life with...and...ooops...wrong forum
sidkuhn: The same reason there aren't many female mathematicians.
FrozenHoHos: I suppose the stereotype (hygiene / general appearance, over competitiveness, social inadequicies) keep them away
XenoMaster: Female gamers are not rare, it's just the male game groups tend to scare them off. If you have a mature group they stay and come. If they get hit on by every creepy guy there they tend to leave quickly. My group is now me, another guy, a girl, and a married couple. We get together and have fun. Perhaps more importantly, that's not the basis of our friendships. If your friendships are based mostly around the game only, it's hard to keep people too involved
Chris Page: Cultural habits. Plus certain male gamers.
mlanza: It's the quality of the male gamers, I think.
Laudwic: because the desparate male gamers scare them off
zoopiglet: Some women reject the concept without trying it because they are too image-conscious and don't want to be seen as being 'geeky'. Others just haven't had the chance to play the sort of game that would actually appeal to them. Luckily I admit to being geeky and have an awesome boyfriend that introduced me to games that I actually like to play.
POvidiusNaso: Games are competitive, and men, in general, are more competitive than women.
kracken: Because we have yet to draw them into the hobby
Linguist: because the majority is male?
keldrak: i wish there were more
jasta6: caues all the male gamers are geeks
brainrob: Because most of the guys (geeks) that play are too competitive for female tastes.
Kazin: Society.
arkibet: because so many designers are men.
modboy: have you ever been to a convention?
ZombyDawg: Social Programming
Evilnames: Because we male gamers dont care about the smell orientating from our gaming tables
jellospike: Because boardgamers are too competitive
Tushratta: For the same reason there are so few male quilters: we're just different.
saulsehy: you stink.
skrutsch: Maybe it's because they weren't wargamers in the past so haven't been converted to the Euro trend?
Megadev: have you taken a look at the average male gamer?
rdmasters: You just hang around the wrong gaming groups. Or perhaps you should shower.
zdschaffner: Says who?
puffinge: There are plenty, but they are all at my house.
e.c.r.: there aren't
sbszine: I think it was the quality and themes of the American games, and that the whole Eurogame boom will bring in lots of female gamers. Since the Euros appeared my game group has gone from zero women to mostly women :)
Lord_Prussian: They grow up?
Bearcat89: Because male gamers are smelly and obnoxious.
erli: Male gamers
KnobDoctor: Probably has something to do with the way their moms teach them not to date us.
scriptorum: Because male gamers are so repulsive?
thoia: Because when you boil it all down, it really does take some dorkiness to play games. That tends to be a male trait.
AWildEep: All our base belongs to them.
tram10014: Gaming is kind of a fringe hobby. It's different, and most girls are attracted to normality.
heli: many reasons, mostly around the faults of men
UhhhClem: Because so few male gamers are like me.
AlorielLelyn: The games were not to the liking of women. That has changed with the addition of Eurogames...
isolated: Because most male gamers are creepy losers. Well we are!
shippert: There's some historical momentum here; long-term (i.e. pre-German) gamers were geeks and grognards, and that population skewed male for the same reason that sci-fi and war movies had a largely male audience. I think most women would be reluctant to be the only woman in a social gathering of men, and so it's harder to bring women into the hobby, unless you do it in multiples.
[Deleted user]: Emotion
Scott Firestone IV: Gamers generally smell like a locker room, but lack the locker room physique.
davedanger: i got one, so i am 50/50
Andy Parsons: Too much conflict in games
GuyHill: i happen to know quite a lot of woman gamers :)
Blackwind: Cause we male gamers don't shower enough.
CortexBomb: Because too many male gamers excrete a scent that is hostile to female life?
Mordachai: Socialisation.
DangerMouse: Because this is a damn geeky hobby we got going here. That and the competition thing. Oh yeah, and the stench too.
djlg: Social conditioning
netfilterz: I'm sure there's plenty. Just none you know ;-)
darthcliff: Because male gamers are breeding like rabbits
haraggan: Because most women can get dates
kuhrusty: Sheesh, if I had breasts, you think I'd waste my time with *games* ??
Vince Londini: Don't like combat strategy games...don't like the agression their significant other shows when competing to win?
BobDodgerBlue: Men and Women are different
dietevil: Society looks down on the female geek more than the male geek. Not that *I* give a darn.
yossarians: This is too complicated a question with so many socio-political aspects that I can't even try to answer it here.
kennyb: i'll ask my wife...
Shakar: Because we frighten them.
Pseudo Nymh: I always imagined that girls had better things to do with their time.
Ludocrazy: We're usually too busy to play
snoozefest: nurture
cad614: You're playing the wrong games.
fanaka66: Social role brainwashing.
Denise: There are plenty around here - most of my group is female.
queequeg: stereotype
knievel: That's a generalisation, not a question. It should be why do I know so few female gamers? Or what is the ratio of female to male gamers?
coolio: Gaming is built on competition and females in general are not wired as competitive beasts in the same way as men
CheetohFingers: have you seen most of the male ones?
EndersGame: Boys like toys, whereas girls grow up.
dakarp: Male gamers
tragicpoet: Too few games about nesting. Just kidding. It's probably the calibur of men who play that scare girls off.
seppo21: There are lots of them, but none of the weird male gamers see them because all of the weird male gamers scare them away. If male gamers didn't act so oddly, they would stay around.
berserkley: It's not something a lot of females are into, and a lot of male gamers are off putting and immature
janiera: There are so few??? I didn't know that
EYE of NiGHT: In our society, girls are taught not to compete, especially not with boys. It is meant to be unattractive. Men are also inherently more interested in mechanics, and so understanding how a game works, and so how to win, is more appealing.
HBGlover: Probably because male gamers don't present themselves very well.
Mike A: I have two sons, but only one daughter.
IngredientX: Are there "so few?" In one of my groups, they outnumber the men 3-1.
AnakinOU: Confrontation avoidance.
CDRodeffer: Why are there so many nerdy male gamers?
Donkey Thong: "Better" things to do (emphasis on the quotes)
Aldie: they can't handle the smell.
LudesFactor: they've got better things to do?
louiseh: I've no idea
Jatoha: Cuz boys forget that they are just playing a game
Sky Knight X: Most of my group is female
ValJor: I could write a book about it, this line is not enough for an answer
ynnen: I think there are far more out there than it might appear -- but there is a stereotype and barrier to entry that seems to favor male gamers
mdp4828: because male gamers are so smelly
chaddyboy_2000: If girls had penises, it would fix everything. Or something.
Geosphere: I'll have to ask my wife during our next game.
skelebone: Population density.
Dante_Cubit: Maybe they're smarter than we are.
WasQ: still too get married witn a gamer
TD2008YDS: because chicks dont like to hide indoors
Snooze_uk: There aren't. They're just all in hiding. Just out of view in the shadows there. Watching you. Waiting. Waiting.......
Jon_1066: Because you've scared them all off
MisterCranky: For the same reason so few men show up at Tupperware Parties
jttm: No no, what you mean to ask is, "Why are there so few 'pretty' female gamers?"
Debate: Women generally prefer more cooperative, less competitive pursuits.
Fawkes: Because so many male gamers are annoying and suffer from poor hygeine.
mistermarino: Man odor
Gomez: 1. Boys are smelly. 2. Boys treat girls rudely when gaming. 3. Girls aren't so competitive.
Flyspeck23: Not where I live - it's 50/50.
hooded_paladin: The stereotypes involving boardgaming keep more women away than men.
Septic: But the ones we do have more than make up for it!
gnomehome: So few ? It's more like 60/40 over here
Friendless: Games are an obsession of the male mind, not the female one
Karlsen: Are there? I know heaps and am happily married to one :-)
