Randy Cox: Why does it seem that so many BGGers (supposedly game fans) eschew the WBC (and don't say it's because of tournaments--because there's as much open gaming as tourneys there)?

Hector Vortac: Sorry, Randy, directly or indirectly it's the tournaments. Maybe it's the makeup of the gamers that attend a tournament-based con, who then compose the players available for open gaming. It comes down to one word: chemistry.

ThatFalafelGirl: I went for the first time last year and had a lot of fun. Mostly i opened gamed, in which i learned a lot. Aaand, the only convention i've ever been to where there was never ever a line for the ladies room. Score!

dakarp: Hey, I go there every year, and if I don't go this year, it will be because of the tournaments. And don't tell me there is just as much open gaming--I've been there, and been told more times than I can count "I can play something, but it has to be short because I have a tournament in 30 minutes." Who needs that? But it is fun despite the tournaments, and I'll try to go this year.

puffinge: World Boardgaming Championships, I've been to every one and I average 1.27 tournaments per year. I have a great time open gaming with people I only see once or twice a year. You should go.
sumo: Largely because it is on another continent, at peak travel time, and anyway we boycott it for the same reason we boycott and American "World Championships". Sorry Don.

Randy Cox: Good points. I don't like the pretentious "World Championship" words, but without it, we'd say "Who's going to the B?" And I, too, don't like playing with "alphas". But, trust me, there are plenty of us "deltas" who game at the wBc.

Spielfreak: I dunno. Maybe because the WBC has its roots in wargaming, and that connotation has just stuck, even though there are a multitude of Euro games played.
CortexBomb: It's because of tournaments, that's why I'm not interested and why I don't even consider going. I'm sure there is open gaming there, but anything with Championship in its title is going to bring out more alphas than I prefer to game with
