Beery: Let's face it, most poor spellers on BGG are native English speakers, and most people who have a problem with the spelling police are folks who clog up the forums with appalling spelling, leet speak and bad grammar.
virre: No that's because that is a sign of geekiness. And we do learn by the spelling and grammar police (and some of us is in the force too)

DHEK: If that is the reason, then maybe the spelling and grammar police are being too harsh. However, there are many instances where the users ARE native speakers but who are just too ignorant or lazy to write properly or legibly.

Numskull: Based on my experience, native English speakers are MORE likely to make ridiculous errors like "evar" and "definately"; this can really take a toll on your mental health when you're somebody who cares about the art of the written word.

And yes, in as much as "ignorant" is an entirely relative description and one can be ignorant of some things (English Grammar, for example) without being ignorant in general. In any case, I can generally tell the difference between someone who is not a native English speaker and someone who is, but simply doesn't bother with spelling or grammar.

ValJor: I'm not part of the spelling and grammar police, but I think it is important to write well, otherwise communication can break down. And hey, there are free spell checkers, it doesn't cost you a penny to check your messages, there is no reason to write things like becuase, commerical, teh and others like that.

Tim Synge: (1) You should be using a lower case "w" after the comma. (2) You have created an ambiguity, because the "they" in the second sentence could refer to "spelling and grammar police" or to "many BGG users". (3) I think all BGG users are "native speakers", just not of the same language.

AlorielLelyn: I am usually much more forgiving of non-native speakers. Typically it is apparent in their grammer to some degree in different ways than native speakers. They make different errors. I am very unforgiving when it comes to people who have been speaking and writing this language all their life.
