DHEK: Yes it's the better way to do things to drive on the left side. Most of the world does that, so the rest should follow suit for uniformity. And contrary to what people may think, using the gear shift with a non-dominant hand is NOT hard at all. In fact, there's nothing strange or unusual about doing that. It comes as easily as with the dominant hand.

scriptorum: Shifting with your right is probably best for most people, but I remain skeptical that the driver side should be closest to the edge of the road and not the median. Actually I think all drivers should take a middle seat. That way they might have a chance of actually driving down the middle of the road, rather than just think they're driving down the middle of the road but being wrong, wrong, wrong. Also, I think cars should be round and surrounded in rubber. Bumper cars will increase road safety by a factor of gazillion, mark my words!

nexttothemoon: I've driven in both types with stick shifts. When you sit on the left side of the car (and drive on the right side)...the stick shift is on your right...when you sit on the right side of the car (and drive on the left side) the stick shift is on your left.

AlorielLelyn: I have often thought about that as well. It's hard to say which is better since the advent of the automatic transmission, but definitely back in the manual days it would make sense with right-handed driving. I don't think it would be wise to switch a country however...
