¿Question #220288?
TomTi89: Should I use my car for as long as possible until it finally gives up completely, or sell it on and use the money for a newer [but still old-ish] car? At what point would you decide to do the latter?
Fribian: It could be expensive getting a new engine. Probably trading up is better.
pricero1: If I can't rely on the car or if the repairs are significant, it's time for a new one.
imyourskribe: My car swaps have either been when I needed something functionally different (child on the way and a tiny back seat) or when I felt like I would get significant safety improvements by trading in. In my case, I’ve felt it worth the jump at about 10 to 15 years old.
Gilgermesh: It always makes the most financial sense to ride it until it turns to dust. But I prize reliability. Knowing that I'll never be broken down in the middle of knowwhere is worth something to me. So I always trade them in for new when it gets to the point of needing frequent repairs.
Woelf: I had a 15+ year old car that I had planned to keep driving as long as possible, but then the engine fried so I had to get something else. Honestly, I probably should have done that a few years earlier. It sounds like vehicle prices have been going way up because of shortages and supply issues (not sure if it's the same in the UK, but I'm assuming so) so it might be better to hold out for now if you can, unless you can find something suitable before getting rid of your current one.
