¿Question #221334?
TomTi89: What was your most recent clandestine operation?

mattomaw: I used to work for a monumental mason who had his workshop at a stone yard. The stone yard would get orders for house name plaques and things like that and they would pay my boss to make them. I was the one who actually made them. I left that job a couple of years ago and went back to being self employed, however my (now old) boss would sub contract me in to do these nameplates. Great! I actually got paid twice as much for making thme as a self employed lettercutter. However, he was still taking around 50% of the price. Just being the middleman really. All he did was provide me with the relevant printout (I hate printouts! I like to draw lettering by hand, but that is another story!) which took him 5 minutes, and I would carve it, which took 4 hours! That is OK, I was happy enough, I still got a decent wage for it. However, there was a little bit of history with me and my old boss, where when I worked for him, he was not very good at paying me on time. At one point he probably owed me 4 months wages. It did not really bother me, because I don't need much money to live and it was kind of doing him a favour for various reasons which I won't go into, and I wanted to help him out. After a while it did become a problem and I felt kind of abused a bit and under appreciated. These were contributory factors why I left him. Anyway, so I was sub contracted to do his nameplates. Now I had a very close relationship with the owners of the stone yard and had done some private work for them in the past. I would very much have liked to get the nameplate jobs from them but did not want to be ajerk and steal my old boss's goose that laid the golden egg. About two months ago, my old boss said he wanted me to do some nameplates. Ok, send me the printouts. He didn't. I mentioned it to him again. Still he didn't. I don't know why. So I said nothing more about it. Meanwhile, I had some dealings with the stone yard and kept mentioning that I had not had the printouts. Weeks passed, and the stone yard were getting a bit angry and desperate because the customers were hassling them. Still I said nothing to my boss to remind him. I don't know why he did not send the printouts, I guess he kept forgetting. It was none of my business. However, I definitely felt and hoped, that if the stone yard got pissed off enough with him then they would come to me directly to do them - thus doubling my wages again! In this way, I could not be accused of stealing the work (which I did not want to do) but I may well end up getting the contracts. I could supply the nameplates quicker, cheaper and better quality than he could produce. Anyway, so I waited. And waited. And finally, the stone yard came to me and I did them straight away and as well as I possibly could. I now have the contract, and get paid FOUR times as much as I did when I worked for him! I imagine my old boss is a bit pissed, but it was his own fault really. That was my latest clandestine operation. One of silence and patience.
