rayzg: A friend remarked that they weren’t interested in watching the latest West Side Story movie because it’s based on Romeo and Juliette, and they found the plot line of that Shakespeare classic ridiculous because the characters killed themselves because of love. (Spoiler alert: no one kills themselves in West Side Story.) Why do so many classic plays and operas feature suicide as the only way to resolve relationship issues?

pricero1: If the audience are expecting a tragedy, they expect some sadness, and suicide is good because the character can be fine right up until they kill themselves.
