PolarDad: Do you prefer to... Read the rule book? Watch a how to video? Be taught by someone else? Or just wing it until someone corrects you?

Woelf: I don't mind being taught a game by someone else in person, but I will ALWAYS read the rulebook myself when possible. I've never liked how-to-play videos because most either blow through things too fast, or they waste too much time jabbering about stuff that's not actually important. Absolute worst-case-scenario is when you open up a brand new game and someone starts reading the rulebook out loud. Take a couple minutes to read through it on your own, then teach from there.
pricero1: I read long reviews first, which give me a good idea of how things work, then I read the rules. I usually play a game by myself first, with the rules book open, then I teach my wife.
TheNameWasTaken: Dr. Jam's approach is best for me too - video to get an idea of what the game is about, then rulebook for details. And I'm much happier teaching games to others than learning them from others.
magikaru: Video to get a general gist of how the game works. Then rulebook plus mucking around with the components.
Jedadeana: If someone teaches well and knows the game I don't mind being taught, otherwise I like to watch a video (or two) first to get a general idea and then read the rulebook
rayzg: Definitely read the rule book. I do not like video at all.
