pricero1: How do you react when people contract or change your name when they address you?

TomTi89: Tom is already shortened, so that's ok. I actually want to be called Tom or Tommy, and not the full version. T might be acceptable. Some people accidentally say the wrong name. It happens. Recently I only seem to be called the names of my supervisors. Should I take that as a promotion of sorts? Also, as long as it was an accident, I tell the person "call me whatever you want :) ".

rayzg: They do this *all the time*, especially in Quebec where (a) Raymond is considered an old man's name and (b) I'm anglophone, so calling me "Raymond" with a French pronounciation is somewhat awkward. For me, it's like a little test to see who's comfortable enough around me to shorten my name from Raymond to Ray.
Ruesailmana: It's okay if you call me Bo or Bobo, I know my own name is not the easiest to pronounce for non-Dutch speakers anyway
Grimsalt: An online gamer once called me "Fartin Martin" - I had to act quickly before it caught on. He was laughing too hysterically to hear me out, but as soon as I souped-up his own name, he STFU.
Woelf: I try to gently correct it right away, or ignore it (and sometimes them) if it keeps happening.
