mattomaw: I have to buy a new mattress for my elderly father. I have never bought a mattress. 52 years old and have never bought a bloomin mattress! Nuts eh? Anyway, there are bloody millions of different types! Like billions! It's like my underpants all over again! How the hell am I meant to choose? It is hard enough getting my dad in and out of one bed, let alone getting him to try some different types. There is just too much choice for my tiny brain! Rolled up, orthapaedic, memory foam, floaty jobbie, diamond dreams, blibby blobby! Do what? Why can't we just have crap, alright and top of the range. That would be a nice choice. I mean "floaty dream diamond marshmallow softness" might be crap. Just call it "cheap crap one for paupers". That would be easier wouldn't it. What kind of mattress do you have?

TomTi89: Let me put you in touch with my wife. She can tell you all about our mattress. I am in your position, Matt, having never actually researched and bought one myself.
sparkous: I changed my mattress a short time ago as well as the bed frame. The next day I had back pain. I thought about the problem and decided to change my slatted bed frame. I got rid of the slatted base with a certain flexibility, for a rigid wooden slatted base (no flexibility). Problem solved: I no longer had back pain. At the beginning i accused the mattress wrongly.
Woelf: Standard-ish, with a memory foam (3" thick) topper. Quite a bit less expensive than a full memory foam, but just as comfortable.
BOBBYCAN: I used to love soft ones, but now I have to have some firmness or I get a sore back.
RavingLoon: I'm not sure. I tried some until I found one that I liked, bought it, and have completely forgotten what kind it is.
pricero1: I have a medium-firm sprung foam mattress. The main decision is on how firm your father likes his mattress to be. The other thing you'll notice is that mattresses seem to be ridiculously expensive.
