mattomaw: In Star Wars, why did they have to fly for so long in that trench? It was very dangerous. Why not just fly into it at the very end and shoot the exhaust port?

0Shea0: One time in one SW movie they had to fly "directly above" to "drop" their payload......THERE IS NO UP AND DOWN IN SPACE JUST ROTATE IN PLACE!!
Woelf: There were lots more shooty things outside of the trench, and even the ones inside it were set up for shooting out, so fighters were the only good defense against something that got in there. The X-Wings were meant to take care of any fighters that went after the Y-Wings, but they didn't count on Vader showing up personally to annihilate everyone.
