¿Question #226809?
Woelf: What's a board game that you enjoy playing, but would never suggest to others who haven't already played it?

Ruesailmana: Mage Knight. I wóuld suggest Twilight Imperium though, as an experience.
Grimsalt: Traditional asian chess. Xangqi and Shogi play faster and more dynamically than Go (currently in vogue), War Chest and Onitama (popular CDG $pinoff$). While learning a handful of useful ideograms —recurrent in manga and anime— is actually a lot easier than memorizing game-specific iconography, kanji often detracts players to the point that they'll avoid it altogether by learning the game with an international tourist set ; and therein lies the problem, because it'll sit on your shelf unplayed if you don't ever read-up on general strategy to gain a sense of purpose and direction, just as for western Chess.
RealGuest: Food Chain Magnate is a game that almost always goes badly on your first play. So, I have a hard time recommending anyone play. A learning game takes a couple hours. There are other games with steep learning curves that I'd not suggest unless there was time to really dig in to a learning game.
