Woelf: Not often. Most soups don't need it. French Onion, always, though.

pricero1: It's a must-have when I serve Basler mehlsuppe and Parmesan is great with courgette / zucchini soup.
Ruesailmana: I hardly ever eat soup, but cheese should be added to onion soup
mattomaw: Reasonably often. Especially home made soups.
