¿Question #228156?
pricero1: Why are pentagrams associated with black magic?
Phil%20Fleischmann: Because it was the symbol of the Pythagoreans, who were really interested in math and geometry, and the mathematecal/geometrical properties of the pentagram. And many people didn't understand math or geometry at all. And often, when people see something they don't understand, they assume it must be magical and/or evil.
Woelf: Because when an emerging major religion co-opted practices, events, holidays, and numerous other things various pagan religions, they made sure to leave behind certain imagery that they could still point to and claim "evil".
BOBBYCAN: Because they're cool.
mattomaw: I have a theory (BS probably) that a 5 sided shape is very difficult to generate easily through basic geometry. Most other numbers can easily be generated using a compass and straight edge. 2,3,4,6,7,8,9 etc can easily be reproduced from a circle. 5 can too, but it is much harder and much more hidden. Thus 5 is more of an outlier, or rouge or seperate from the rest. Maybe this gets considered unconformist or something, and ultimately, through time and society etc this gets perceived and negative and bad and thus gets associated with negative things like the occult or the devil etc. Probably total crap, but who cares?
Jedadeana: From what I remember reading it has to do with the orientation and various elements. I've also seen pictures showing it with a goat's head fitting inside, which might just be artistic license (poor goats get such bad PR)
TomTi89: The pentagram itself isn't, but its orientation is. One point at the bottom = the black magic / demonic version. Two points at the bottom = the "good" version. Also, it's at the point now where people know of an association between pentagrams and black magic, so they use it that way, and then other people see the association, even if they don't know the original reasons for it.
