¿Question #229846?
Derang3d: Would karaoke be better if people picked the song for other people?

TheGrimReeple: I've seen an approach (not in karaoke, at a folk music event, but it could be adapted) where you can make requests, but your choice is between choosing a singer (who picks their own song), or choosing a song (and hoping one of the singers volunteers to sing it).
PolarDad: Let Mediis pick
ocdspectrum: No. I just did some karaoke last night for my Bday and gave a few folks some choices for what I would sing, but singing a song you don't know well from the request of another is no bueno.
Derang3d: Personally, I've been to Karaoke twice - both times for the birthday of the same lass, who can sing well enough to be in an actual choir. So in my experience it's _always_ to laugh at people who can't sing. At least this levels the playing field. Even in case of people who voluntarily go to these things, the math checks out - it's more hilarious for everybody else. Needs of the many...
rayzg: Definitely not! It's not fun singing a song you don't know, especially if the backing track doesn't have a hint of the song's melody.
Woelf: If the goal is to embarrass people, that would increase the effect. If the goal is to hear normal people trying to do a reasonably good job of singing, it's better to let them pick something they already know.
