DMF2: I believe it is a backronym so there is no contemporary translation. I've long understood it to mean a queue or silo for periphery operations. Mainframes, unlike the midget architectures, have dedicated processors for I/O so the CPU "spools" I/O requests to be handled asynchronously. ('Course, I could be wrong - it's been a while.)
