Sceadeau: Do you often follow the rules for deciding who is the first player of the game? Or do you do it some other way?

ocdspectrum: Yes, except I was playing a game today that said the last person to ride a dragon was the first player.

petersjs: We do randomly unless one player has a lot more experience than the others with the game. If that's case, and the game has an "oldest/youngest player goes first" rule, we follow that. Only we substitute "most experienced" for "oldest" for and "least experienced" for "youngest".

DHEK: If there are some reasonable rules to determine first player, I'd follow them. But if it's something like "oldest player goes first" or whatever, then we'll usually pick a more random method.
