oldhoss: I don't know what Bur Ives sang, but the line is "fare thee well my fairy Fay." Going back to an American Folk Music course I took in college, I think that both "fairy" and "Fay" were slang words used by slaves that depicted white people in not such a good light (probably with good reason). I think the whole song is full of these hidden jabs, making it a pretty subversive song.

ellephai: Well, first of all, he doesn't say "fare the well," which would make no sense. He says "fare THEE well," which is a rational expression of goodwill. But then right after that he says, "my fairy fay," which could be seen as breaking his sense-making streak. Or at least as repetitive.
