Tim Synge: Ticket to Ride, Power Grid, Transamerica. How come Duluth is such an important US city all of a sudden? It's the only place on all these boards that none of us in the UK have ever heard of.

Woelf: Duluth was and still is a huge port for the shipping industry, so it belongs there. Also they needed a connection in Minnesota.

Caerid: I have read some of the answers to this question, and all I can say is, "wow." Go to Duluth and stay at one of the Bed and Breakfasts there. Most of them are old mansions of shipping barons. Amazing town that had HUGE amounts of money way back when. Still one of the busier ports in North America too.
smallllama: Duluth is the westernmost port on the Great Lakes. This made Duluth a very important place in the 1880s. Goods were shipped by boat to Duluth where they were transported to trains. If you ever get to Duluth (which I recommend) there is a great train museum, lots of beautiful 1880s architecture, and my wife's family. I love all three!

Zedsdead: Now THAT is a good GQ. It probably has some totally mundane answer...easier for the artist to draw connecting lines without crossing the Great Lakes or something.
Eclectic Minnesotan: The vast, vast majority of the iron ore used by the US in WWII and ever since then moved from the iron range of Northern Minnesota through Duluth into the Great Lakes. It is the most important inland port in the US. That's right, just ask the Minnesotan. Anybody want to know where Bob Dylan was born?

Der Ubermolch: Duluth's actually one of the United States' busiest ports. See, they handle a lot of shipping traffic with Canada, which IS our number one trading partner.
