¿Question #3282?
darthcliff: If Minority Report, Blade Runner, and Paycheck were all thought up by the same guy, why did Paycheck suck so bad?

TheGrimReeple: No love for Total Recall? Anyway, there's a few possible answers: Firstly, not all writers are consistent (see Matrix sequels, Star Wars prequels). Secondly, they weren't all adapted by the same people. But the big one is that they're all very different approaches to adaptation, and none of them close to their source. Blade Runner follows the broad strokes, the others are less "based on" and more "very loosely inspired by". And frankly, Minority Report got the worst of it.
ThroughTheDeckGlass: Books or movies? PKD was odd, and movie adaptations depend on many more people than the original author.
Woelf: Just because someone has good ideas most of the time, doesn't mean they'll have good ideas all of the time.
Tenpence: he phoned it in.
xofour: becuase 1/3 was withheld for taxes. Hahahahahaha
Neophyte: Ben Affleck
Felimid: Even Ridley Scott isn't perfect.
Der Ubermolch: I actually liked Paycheck. But you have to remember that there are translators here, which is to say directors, screenwriters, and so forth. Many of the first few James Bond movies were thought up by the same guy, but From Russia with Love is far far superior to, say, You Only Live Twice.
Karlsen: Don't know. Are you talking the films in which case they bear little resemblence to the original stories, so don' t blame PKD
Harkonnen13: Probably Hollywood's fault.
locusshifter: VOOOMMMMIIIITTTTTT!
duchamp: He had a bad day then.
ecobot3001: i liked paycheck better then the others until the end :(
Keonyn: Because it had the weakest name
toomanyminis: He didn't write the screenplay.
scooterb23: Ben Affleck
matthan: Ben.
DHEK: Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. The guy lost on Paycheck that time.
maumau: maybe the guy got insane?
rootbeer: Ben Affleck?
Geese: Ben Affleck
_Kael_: Haven't seen the bad one
WatchmanX2000: it did?
Redbeardin84: because they all sucked and you didn't catch on until Paycheck
ZeroZilla: It didn't, it's just you.
jjloc: good question
MaksimSmelchak: I think that actor choice is key in making a good movie... that's why Minority Report and Paycheck had such distinct shortcomings.
Beelzebub: Ben Affleck
bigbadsteve: beats me
Nekura: Have you read the original stories? They are almost nothing like the movies.
erikk: Same reason Minority Report sucked so bad. Hollywood doesn't get Phillip K. Dick.
SisyphusX: It didn't! *Minority Report* wasn't so good, though.
JonBen: The other two arn't the best movies made either
brainrob: The books are way different from the movies
fFish: Ben Affleck is the obvious answer. The drugs weren't working that day is the other one that comes to mind. Also, add A Scanner, Darkly to that list.
vampywife: you can't win them all
MisterCranky: Because both the other films did as well?
scriptorum: To piss you off, certainly.
patrick95350: Haven't Seen It...
davidme: Because that guy was lead actor.
Ebon Wendigo: Dunno, never saw Paycheck. Could have been in the way it was interpeted for the screen.
Johan: Because what's-his-name starred in it. Mr Dick should be read, not watched.
confuse_a_cat: I couldn't get caught up in the excitement of Paycheck. I mean, the guy saw the future, so we all knew that everything would turn out okay in the end. (Oh no, bad guys chasing him with guns! Oh, wait, it turns out he has some key that lets him escape. What were the odds of that?)
Unitbuster: and why was Blade Runner a total downer? Have you tried to read that Electric Sheep book? Good lord... DEEE pressing
Kazin: Affleck.
Fawkes: Don't blame Dick, blame the film producers. They picked the writer, director and cast. (And I agree, Paycheck was awful.)
Syrion: Well, all of the PKD movies were changed a good deal from the source material--and PKD's source material isn't exactly an example of consistently brilliant prose. He wrote great stories. He also wrote some really bad ones.
flyinghogfish: Didn't think it was that bad, but I'd blame the movie producers
erli: I didn't know that but thanks for the info. I won't check out Paycheck
POvidiusNaso: Because some dumb ass producer put Ben Affleck in it.
GI Joe: Because no one's perfect.
Jim_P: Two words... Ben Affleck
Regault: Because the other two sucked even worse.
dakarp: "based on a story by..."
Dr. No: none of Dick's work has been performed as it has been written
Cavedog_pdx: Minority Report sucked too, it's just too many people are too busy worshipping Tom Cruise to notice.
jdberry: Minority Report was pretty lame, too.
Lord_Prussian: Minority Report wasn't all that great either.
mrbeankc: Ben Affleck
2amp: everyone has a bad day - mine's lasted about 6 years
sourwyrm: ben affleck
anson: Ben Affleck.
skrutsch: I thought they all did.
leece: Did PKD inspire all three? Hah. Doesn't mean his vision was carried correctly through to the finished product.
The Unbeliever: 42
djlg: Influence of script writers, directors, casting agents & producers.
jttm: Director matters?
snoozefest: didn't see it
puffinge: With all due respect to John Woo, do you think he's the right guy for the cerebral touch that Paycheck needed?
CDRodeffer: I haven't seen any of these.
heli: don't know it
chaddyboy_2000: You must really like movies.
skelebone: Perhaps a bad interpretation of his work. I'd like to see a "The Man in the High Castle" movie.
darthcliff: Two words: Ben Affleck
Spielfreak: Because that's all he was working for -- a paycheck?
