¿Question #350?
Spielguy: Are Steve Jackson Games good for the hobby?
oldhoss: If they bring someone in to the hobby, then yes. Otherwise, his games don't really interest me much.
Hendal: yep, for sure
pwilz: If the hobby is 'Playing Steve Jackson Games' then yes.
Felimid: Yes.
yaverot: Yes, otherwise we'd just have Wizards of the Coast and White Wolf as the big names.
Impy: YES!
bcooperok: eh. Like Illuminati, but after that...
Corran Horn: Some of them, like Zombie Dice, actually are.
Samort7: Of course. Munchkin helped get me in on the ground floor.
olav.mueller: I am not sure why they wouldn't. Any company that produces games is good in my book. Even if I don't like the games that much.
jessitron: I don't know.
vandemonium: Yes. They cure cancer in mice.
alcazar84: Yes. Look at Munchkin, for example. A very light-hearted game, easy to learn, fun to play, involving your opponents when it is not their turn. It keeps everybody engaged all the time.
cgund: ,,
eric_s_raymond: I think so.
Narlgoth: Of course they are! Fun is an important element of gaming and where would BGGs be without the self-mocking games like Munchkin and Chez Geek? :- 1
dante9: Absolutely, they are also good for drinking.
MajorOracle: I don't know.
gmcash: I don't think there are truly any bad games, just ones some people don't like, but that's what is great, there is something for everyone
amadan: i'm not a fan. so i'd probably say no. except that i know some people like them.
Thegreatrob: yes, they give you a humorous breather from seriuos gaming. I consider them necessary.
dogzard: Yes
ZeroZilla: In general, yes. If nothing else, they open the way for more people to accept time not spent in front of a T.V. as time well spent.
ironsizide: In my opinion, yes.
chad56s: His games and themes tend to draw certain types of people in but also tend to repel people at the same time. From the basis of widening the player base for boardgames, I'd say that his games end up being netural to the hobby.
DHEK: Sure. His games have their own fan base and appeal.
elirlandes: Certainly not.
bigbadsteve: sure
Libra: The question is absurd. There is no conceivable way in which *anyone's* games could be *bad* for the hobby. People who claim otherwise about SJG obviously have some kind of childish personal bias against Steve Jackson, and they need to grow up.
gf_ripper: yes
Steve Be: Very few. As much good is done as bad
andsoerinsaid: No, Steve Jackson is my mortal enemy.
diehard4life: not as far as I can see.
revtim: challenged, but better than most people think
Cut & Space: Of course, any game is good for the hobby
fastfingers: yes
Avatar_69: Are they a part of the hobby?
joebelanger: Yes. Lighten up.
Chris Page: Neutral.
Lemur: Wow - great question. I'm going to say yes - his older games are great: Illuminati, etc.; but recently, you get a lot of fluff for a lot of $$$ (Munchkin didn't even include a die - not that you need it; but it's the point!)
brainrob: Yes
stray_flux: They've got a couple of my friends into the hobby, so sure, plus they're easy to put on my /ignore list.
ChaosOrdeal: The land-fill filling hobby?
Quest22: meh
LemonyFresh: Sure
Tennantgamer: I love Steve jackson Games, they're terribly addictive and loads of fun expecially with experienced gamers.
jellospike: Why not? I have only played Illuminati (and liked it), so I don't know about Munchkin or the others, but how can a boardgame harm the boardgame hobby? Well, CCG maybe do, cause they're expensive and addictive and I think someone hooked on that is less likely to try other, stand-alone games.
vetinari7878: It depends on the games.
MochaKimono: Munchkin!
Bahamut-X: They are small fun games, why no
Yollege: They aren't bad for the hobby, but I wouldn't say good either...
mats-k: Yes.
Gecko23: Games are games are games.
GI Joe: Sure-- why not?
Tushratta: Yes.
skrutsch: Some are.
edosan: No.
Lord_Prussian: Yes
ssmooth: What hobby?
dr glaze et al: Um, I hate to say this but no. In the end it gives RPG'ers a bridge into the hobby that leads to pretty bad, overpriced games. Likely that they chase away a huge potential group from boardgames that would otherwise be a natural fit.
scriptorum: Absolutely. Is air good for your lungs? I don't understand this anti-Steve-Jackson snobbery. If you don't like his games, don't play them, but how can you possibly suggest his company's existence makes your gaming less fun? Mind boggling.
AWildEep: Donno
2amp: yes
shotokanguy: Yes. Steve Jackson is a good guy who takes too much abuse here.
ThatFalafelGirl: i don't know what everyones issue with Steve Jackson games are, but i have always really enjoyed all the ones i've played, and i think they're good. They fill a very important niche in the gaming industry with people that might not be interested in Heavy Strategy or war gaming.
arkibet: They're hit or miss. But yes in general.
HappyProle: Definitely no. They're not good for much, period.
Sceadeau: Sure. Just don't take them too seriously.
sifu-uk: no - they are boring and I'm sure they put people off. (Well they put me off the hobby.)
fizzix: If your hobby is fleecing gamers and your name is Steve Jackson, then yes.
toulouse: Yes. I might not be answering this question if Munchkin didn't exist
jimchris: They're a mixed blessing. Assimilation has it's pros and cons.
RandallPeek: Yes, because most people want to pay too much for shoddy components.
sbszine: They're good for the hobby if you're a teenaged lad.
redhuntingcap: sure.
FullTinCan: Yes.
Randy Cox: Not really
ptper: no, not hugely good though

gnomehome: I'm not really fond of SJ Games.
Dave: Yes - we have to rant incorehently about *something*...
AlorielLelyn: Yes
fellonmyhead: Yes, as long as you mean the gaming hobby in general. I don't think they add much to modern designer games.
thoia: Good for the hobby? Yes. They will introduce gaming to new people, they will get people to thinking that gaming can be more than track based dice/money games (Life, Monopoly, Clue, etc [keep in mind I'm not bashing these games]) Does that make SJ games good games? That's another question.
Styro: Variety is the spice of life
Windopaene: Nope
GuyHill: maybe. Munchkin is awfully popular these days
Mordachai: Yeah, at least several of them.
lexen: i do not like them, that doesn't mean that they're bad for the hobby though.

chaddyboy_2000: No.
netfilterz: They have their audience no doubt, so why not...
P.O.G.G.: Why not?
Michael Becker: of course. they have introduced lots of roleplayers to a new aspect of gaming other than d20's and character sheets
fsumarc: some of them.
tp_ryhansen: I like them, yes.
sdownin: No.
phantomvortex: What hobby: selling air?
djflippy: In the Microgame era, they were great for the hobby.
Karlsen: Yes, they bring some people into the hobby
BobDodgerBlue: Yes
loonling: sure. why not?
SeanT: Yes, but I'll never play one
AngusBull: sure
Ludocrazy: Yes. Despite comments here, Munchkin sells well and people enjoy playing it.
ejmowrer: Steve Jackson needs to stick to RPGs! His board and cardgames suck.
Komodo: NO! NONONO!
snoozefest: they're good for RPGers
TD2008YDS: are they good? no. are they good for the hobby? yes.
Denise: Well, I know several people who would not have gotten into the hobby were it not for SJ Games.
Shakar: They don't hurt the hobby, so yes.
queequeg: sure
sumo: No. But they are still better than Cheapass.
TamiWhitsett: sure
Blackwind: Are Steve Jackson Games good?
Critical Mass: yes they hold the other board games up higher on the shelf
djlg: Yes. (They're cheap and accessible.)
MisterCranky: Of course they are. Any product that helps keep the stores in business so they can supply us with free places to play better games is a great game for the hobby.
pernishus: sure
CortexBomb: The hobby being what in specific? SJ games are good side-entertainment for RPGers, but I don't think they do much for the Euro or Wargame scenes
Nomadik: If they weren't over priced
Aldie: Yes.
HMS_Resolution: I like GURPS, but I'll pass on everything else.
CheetohFingers: yes
nexttothemoon: I have never played any...probably never will. Nothing against them...I just have never seen them and they haven't risen up on my radar screen to purchase them either.
PghArch: Yes.
rochs77: Never played any
The Maverick: Virtually all games are good for the hobby.
WasQ: yes
melissa: yes
jttm: Not in my opinion.
Debate: Absolutely. Plenty of us started with Steve Jackson
berserkley: I think so
Friendless: Only just
seppo21: If the hobby is inflicting pain on oneself or one's friends.
janiera: Yes... just a little pricy.
fnord23: sort of, but not really, depending on what you mean by "the hobby"
Zambo: Sure...for getting RPGers to cross over to other types of games, yeah.
skelebone: Dunno. I own one, but the way everyone carries on, you get a legal pad and a pencil in a box, with a poorly mimeographed sheet that explains how to draw out the counters.
Jim_P: Yes
Flyspeck23: Yes.
Ebon Wendigo: Yes, there are many of them that I like and they supply get enjoyment to a large group of gamers, thats always a good thing
CDRodeffer: What a prejudiced question. Of course they're good for the hobby. Almost any exposure is good for the hobby.
EYE of NiGHT: Ultimately no.
Reloaded: Sure...
HBGlover: I guess they're doing no harm. They're great for roleplayers.
MikeMKH: No
ynnen: Yes. More games = larger audience = more people you can eventually expose to better games.
Spielfreak: Yes, they provide counter examples when making comparisons to good games.
Mndwrm: Anything creative and fun is good for the hobby.
disclamer: Why wouldn't they be?
louiseh: Harmless
