Gibbo: Old group slowly drifting apart for lack of time to play games, someone discovers Settlers, someone discovers BGG, someone plays Puerto Rico, we start buying games like there is no tomorrow.
itjoe: Board games provide a comfortable form of social interaction, combining light conversation with intellectual stimulation (and often humor). They're a perfect excuse to get together, and a something to keep yourselves occupied while hanging out.

DHEK: Some friends and I gathered to play Axis & Allies Europe. After a game one of the friends asked us if we'd like to try Settlers of Catan. The rest of us said okay, and the rest is history.

mlanza: Exposure to games as a kid and loving them; befriending the son of a game store owner; playing lots of Talisman (and other games) at his house; went off to college and stopped gaming for over 10 years; hit 30 and reassessed life; thought about gaming and why I hadn't been doing it; bought Settlers, Acquire and Tikal; the rest is history

jasta6: First my brother got me gaming at 13 years old. Then a coworker reintroduced to it in the mid 80's. I started with Up Front and soared from there.
dwarf: Discovered BGG. Sold most of what I had in 2004. Bought so many better ones to my liking today.

tipigi: While looking for RPGs, I saw Blokus and thought the kids would like it. I looked up Blokus on the net, found BGG, the rest is history...

Syrion: Played games of Cranium and Monopoly against a few friends, and developed the urge to have better games. I bought Settlers of Catan, Tigris & Euphrates, and San Juan; one of my friends got Heroscape. It's all good. (Though I think Heroscape might be the sort of game which monopolizes the attention--and money--of a gamer.)

Odat: Our landlord gave us a copy of Carcassone for christmas. It's a steep slope from there.
nix342: I've always been playing board games. As a child I had a whole cabinet full and it's just continued through the rest of my life.

starbug: I played "family games" and card games quite a bit as a kid with my family, since it was cheap entertainment. When I moved in with the man who is now my husband, I started role-playing in a D&D game he ran and a Champions game that a friend ran. Then I started playing Matt's old microgames with him, and my interest in board games developed from there. This explains why I'm an unusual Geek Girl in that I have an odd fondness for hex & counter games and don't go for Euros quite so much. But I never got into historical war games because of an utter lack of interest in military history.

CDRodeffer: I needed to relieve some stress in grad school, so some others in my department and I took to having game nights.
skelebone: My brother bought Carcassonne, I played, but I wanted to do better than him. I went looking for Carcassonne strategy, and I found BGG.
CortexBomb: I was still deep in the throes of Magic, and while going through my daily 2 hours of article reading I ran across a mention of a certain Settlers game which had captivated someone straight out of Magic. I didn't pursue it immediately, but around Christmas I was looking for something to play with my friends, and ran across a copy. We played it, loved it, and the Euro game thing began
Spielfreak: Growing up, I had a repressed game acquisition affliction, as all games that entered our house were gifts for my older brother. In college I was introduced to games 'beyond monopoly', including Acquire, Kingmaker, and D&D. I discovered the Compleat Strategist game shop in Boston, and started buying Microgames. A friend gave me a subscription to GAMES magazine, and then I was hopelessly hooked. Things stagnated for a while until I noticed a co-worker wearing an Illuminati pin, and the gaming fires were then re-stoked. I then progressed from Civilization to M:tG to Settlers. The advent of internet access facilitated my curiosity and ultimate involvement in German style games.
heli: Interested from youth, then shown Diplomacy and other war games in high school, ran the games club in college, slightly lowered interest during early job years, became a consultant with more free time and discovered there was a weekly games meeting at the local game store.
