The definition I generally side with is the intentional killing of a human being, so execution is murder, but killing animals for food (i.e., meat) is not because these animals are not human. It's still killing, though. In any case I eat meat, although out of guilt I try to avoid things like veal and lamb, despite being very tasty.

WatchmanX2000: You mean is the process that produced the meat from a living creature murder, and the answer to that depends on what creature was killed (human? if so, how may prove to be yes, yet might not) and under most circumstances the answer would clearly be no, the process was not murder since that act only applies in the case of human beings. I'd be willing to entertain arguments that killing sentients with a real intelligence might be murder in which case you could have some non-human meat that was generated through the process of murder if we had met some alien that met that definition. However at this time only humans sufficiently fulfill the reasonable man analysis of being sentient intelligences and there by murder only applies to humans. So the answer is obviously meat itself is not murder, it's an object, and the process that killed the creature the meat came from probably wasn't murder either. Get over it.

In practical terms, I think the word "murder" is more effective as a meme regulating human behavior if it is only applied to situations that break the law. In other words, the injuries allowed by our societies need many bandaids. We may need to be careful to keep the biggest wounds as firmly bandaged as possible. That may leave us only smaller bandaids to use on the remainder.
