¿Question #3862?
erli: Do you believe in evolution?

Woelf: It doesn't matter if you believe in it or not. It exists either way.
ricardofo: I believe in microevolution, but not macroevolution
Thunade: Do you not?
Jatoha: I do
Tim Synge: Yes, since baldness is demonstrably a sign of being evolutionarily advanced.
the manatee: No; it's like gravity: it's just a theory.
kathleenryan: Yes, of course!
pakruse: It isn't really a belief - given the evidence and scientific consensus, I accept the logic and elegance of the theory of evolution for it's explanatory and predictive power. If there is ever a better alternative, or if there are ever any problems found with the evolutionary theory, I will consider the new evidence. It's like asking if you believe in gravity. I know it exists, and the current theories explain most natural phenomena, but if there is something better that comes along (something that better explains dark matter), I will consider the new evidence.
Commandex: nope
Rygel: Yes
GrrBlarg: Not as much as I believe in devolution
xofour: How do you define "believe in"? It is demonstrable that evolution occurs.
Zedsdead: Do you believe in gravity?
IdahoGeekette: I feel that science and Relgion are NOT mutually exclusive, as did the scientists and philosphers of the age of reason. If God made the Universe, couldn't have done whatever the heck he wanted? By learning the world around us and how it works, do we not learn more about Gods work? Then CS lewis beleived we were under the control of nature because we forsake eden. Go figure. But yes, I do beleive in science processes, but I also firmly believe we don't know it all, just parts of it, and that in no way invalidates God.
Nikku: Yes, is there an alternative? ;)
RustanR: Yes
MotUfan: Within a species, yes. Across species, no.
jrbentley: If you want to tell me your great-grandfather was a babboon, you go right ahead. :)
Ardos: I find micro-evolution believable as a scientific theory. I find macro-evolution to lack significant evidence.
Boarass: Yes, but I'm not one of those arrogant atheists who think that anyone who doesn't is a scientifically illiterate moron.
tofuji: yes
vandemonium: Yep
Chazar: No, since there is no point in believing in known facts.
dogzard: Microevolution, as in change within a species, yes. Darwinian Origin of Man evolution? Not hardly
BloodyJack: It's turtles all the way down.
lstr: yes
yams69: Yes
CharmlessMan77: We all Evolve. The human race and creatures evolve. I agree with Darwin though that this affirms my religious beliefs more than it destroys them.
DHEK: Yes.
InShaneee: Yes, strongly.
eduart: tend to
Butterbane: that answer is evolving
jidar: Yes. I'm not an idiot.
TheArchAngel: of course
Blacknightjj: yes
reverendvader: No. Natural selection within species, yes. If evolution is considered an established "fact," then why is a million-dollar prize being offered for "proposing a highly plausible mechanism for the spontaneous rise of genetic instructions in nature sufficient to give rise to life." (See The Origin of Life Prize at www.us.net/life.)
mrspank: It's a well established fact. Biological evolution is as real as gravity. The mechanisms that occur within it are the only remaining mysteries. Asking if you "believe" in it is like asking if you believe in molecules. It's a nonsense question. Do you believe the Earth is flat?!
Gecko23: of course
aleo09: no
mats-k: Yes.
buffalospynovel: geez, it's not a religion. all of you folks who say no, look up the definition of 'theory' as it relates to science. I can hardly believe there is debate about this issue.
daveroswell: yes, and also deevolution (just watch reality tv.)
KentuckyKid: Yes.
ZiggyZambo: No, barring evolution within a species.
eschaton1000: Micro, not necessarily macro. Also I'm not really sure why people object to 'believe' just because they think it's a fact or proven. Are you going to say you DON'T believe in evolution? Strange.
rAdioActivitA: Doesn't matter
SisyphusX: I *understand* evolution. Difference.
Nekura: Yes. Of course, I also believe that there are "higher powers". I just don't get why you can't have intelligent design *and* evolution. Evolution is a pretty intelligent design, IMHO.
BaSL: of what?
brainrob: It's still to be proven ...
albers: Yes
doghouse724: Depends on what you're saying is evolving. And into what.
heli: An extremely well-supported explanation. There's no shame in being descended from an amoeba. Get off your high horse. Human existence is a farce anyway.
CunningGabe: Macro or micro?
Lexi: You don't have to believe in it - it's a proven fact
sdonohue: Yes.
jasta6: NO! I believe in Creation & Intelligent design. Too much faith to believe in evolution...
Helenoftroy: yes and no. Evolution is found everywhere. I doesn't conflict with the Christian Creation story. I don't believe we came from apes but forms of evolution are pretty much proven.
WatchmanX2000: believe? that presupposes it's a religion. there's reproduceable scientific evidence that evolution occurs, whether it's got anything to do with creation, whether it's a tool of god, or an accident of nature, if it's the path of normal mutatory improvement, we'll only know if there is a supreme being and that entity lets us know in person.
Chris Page: "Believe" is the wrong word here, especially given the length of time I've been analyzing patterns on the protein databank.
keldrak: somewhat
scriptorum: Evidence for it seems pretty strong and consistent.
bigbadsteve: not really
jellospike: Unless new scientific discoveries change that, you don't have to "believe" in a FACT.
SteveK2: "belief" is irrelevent - its simply the best (yet) scientific theory
rootbeer: No.
Cyberjunk: Have to. Its a sin not to.
shawn_low: Ask me again 2000 years from now.
djlg: Its a great model which fits the empirical data.
acetate3: yup
flyinghogfish: Yup, why not...
POvidiusNaso: Absolutely.
noon: A theory is either a good explanation of the data or it isn't.
ctalbot: Yes.
Jim_P: Of course
ssmooth: I think it's a darned good theory, but I don't "believe in" it.
mrbeankc: More revolution
skrutsch: yeah
Lord_Prussian: Not exactly, no
ValJor: Is there anything else *really* to believe?
Belash: yes
Linnaeus: Yup.
skelebone: Perhaps I do, and perhaps I don't, but that doesn't really have any bearing on GeekQuestions.
CDRodeffer: Only in a very minor sense.
Randy Cox: It's not a belief issue. It's a fact, deal with it, and stop watching Fox News. :)
jttm: Nothing to believe. Its true :p
Larry Chong: I thought I did when I was younger. I no longer believe in the theory.
erli: I'm a molecular biologist by profession cortexbomb so
chaddyboy_2000: Yes.
CortexBomb: I think it's quite well established at this point...you do realize that scientific theories aren't theories in the layman's sense right?
puffinge: As much as I believe in gravity.
