¿Question #4029?
skelebone: Do you tend to rip off the shrink and go over the components as soon as you purchase a game, or do you wait until your initial playing? I realize this can depend on the scale of the game, so gague your answer to what you typically do.

Woelf: Unless the game was just purchased immediately prior to the first play, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS pull everything out ahead of time and get it sorted and such. Read the rules too, if it's at all possible. That way when you pull the game out for the first play no else has to sit there and wait for you to figure out the game when they could be playing it.
siredofk: I open it and go through components and try not to drool
BOBBYCAN: The former, in days of yore.
rlesco: Much of the experience is going over the components in advance.
samalvor: If uranus is one the components I'll let the cat do the dirty work.
GalasoftGames: I definitely look at every component!
SteveD.: I wait 'till it hits the table to be played.
Pierzasty: As soon as I get home. For me it's a ritual, plus I want to read the rules a few times before setting up the first game.
Barminator89BE: when i get a new game it opens up within 30sec of me arriving at home then depending of the game i'll print tuckboxes right away :D

DasViktor: wait until the initial play unless it is one of those gotta-have games.
jothaa: I wait for the right moment. When I'm all alone :D
daveroswell: Wait til the initial play
JohnnyD: Nowadays, most of the games I get end up going out of print quick or are getting to the table quick...so I open games up and take inventory so I can get replacement parts ASAP!!! It has saved me more than once!
engdy: There's going to be an episode of Mythbusters devoted to my game opening sessions. A high speed camera will be involved. I don't know about explosions yet; we're in talks with the producers.
gjerde: At the first occasion when I have the time and space available, I remove the shrink with the aid of a pocket knife. Next I go through the components and carefully punch and assemble them as required, then I sort and count them and check that everything is present and undamaged. After that I read the rules and play the first few rounds of a mock three player game alone to make better sense of the rules. Finally (for that day) I sort the components into ziplock bags for easy setup. On the next game club session, now being moved from Mondays to Wednesdays after seventeen years, I bring the game and get to try it out for real.
Frubgarde: I consistently have the game unwrapped and the contents under intense scrutiny as soon as I get it home from the store.
puckhead: I always open it as soon as I get it, unless I got it because it was a good deal, rather than because I really wanted it.
byronczimmer: Open, punch, read rules and repackage. It and I am ready when its time to play it.

_Kael_: Taking off the shrink is my favourite part. So typically I want no one there. Maybe except my wife, to share the moment.
nexttothemoon: Rip, shit and bust... as they say here in good ole NZ. I always free the games from their peanut-covered coffins as soon as I get the big packages from overseas. I love looking at all the components and big beautiful gameboards. If I waited till I played them I might be dead by the time the shrink comes off. I have to learn the rules and play them solitaire first anyway.
Gecko23: Yep, them suckers get opened up pronto. I can almost hear the hard core collectors weeping as I do it.

Jeshko: I'll probably have the shrinkwrap off on the drive home.

sos1: Go over the components beforehand
skelebone: I tend to punch at first play. I have several games that I have had for some time that are still in the shrink.
