¿Question #4423?
Randy Cox: Do you purchase automobile tires as the need arises (ie, one at a time), or do you usually purchase a whole set?

robertg611: In pairs actually. You get more even wear and better gas mileage.
PandoraCaitiff: As needed.
pwilz: I usually purchase a whole set.
Woelf: Unless one gets a puncture that can't be patched I do the whole set at once. They should wear pretty evenly if you rotate them regularly. Partial changes, even in pairs, can be extremely dangerous. Very bad things can happen if you have to brake suddenly and your tires are mixed diameters or have significantly different levels of traction.
the_white_wizard: one at a time, sometimes pairs
Little_Black_Dog: one at a time, or 2 if i'm really unlucky
Niediam: I have only purchased them as a set.
MisterCranky: John Henry reminds you, "Only YOU can join COLA!"
Felimid: I purchase two tires at a time that are the same size. It's a danged uncomfortable ride if I choose Monster Truck tires for the front left and rear right tires and Baby Buggy tires for the two tires. And it gives me motion sickness. Ick. :)
jessitron: When one need arises, at least two get replaced.
dedbob: They are one in the same when you hit a set of spike-strips while trying to blow past a police roadblock.
Polgara: per two.
syphon: Usually in pairs.
ricardofo: I bought 2 tires each time.
kathleenryan: a whole set
Blott: Usually in pairs.
topherr: One at a time
waza: Normally a whole set, though occasionally just a pair
Megadev: Typically two at a time as the need arises, but lately my tires have been outlasting my cars.
ZeroZilla: We get ours in pairs, i.e. front or rear.
Wibblenut: I never buy automobile tires, but motorbike tyres I buy in bulk (cheaper that way)
cgund: Two at a time.
Ed_the_Red: They usually seem to wear out in pairs anyway, so generally 2 at a time. Just bought some - £200, ouch!!!!
Keahi: As the need arises
DHEK: I think as theneed arises, unless the other tires are also more or less as worn and need replacing.
POvidiusNaso: A set.
Eric Haas: a whole set
Quixote171: I spend all my money on games, I can't afford a whole set of tires.
Malachi: pairs
Tegre: Whole set.
scriptorum: I'll either get them as a pair (i.e., fronts or backs), or I'll replace all four.
Brentoon: kitten
Reloaded: whole set... driving on different tires produces unnerving effects sometimes.
greenpawn: usually by the axle, unless it's for my motorcycle, then both.
dkwd: usually a pair at a time
petepat: whole set
vampywife: we usually go for a whole set
sidkuhn: whole set.
matpe: When you live in colder climates you need to swap all four into winter tires. So you might as well buy a whole set then, if needed.
RinzaiZen: one-at-a-time
Znirk: ... er ... I buy bicycle tires as needed.
bluebehir: As the need arises, and I actually have that need currently.
lauramath: set
orodreth: 2 at a time

bigbadsteve: as the need arises
brainrob: 2 at a time
Quest22: as the need arises
LemonyFresh: Need-based
Shade_Jon: one at a time.
Loquutus: I take them off your car while you're playing games.
Gecko23: Pairs, unless they are all bad.
mrbeankc: set
ctalbot: I try to avoid doing either.
puffinge: most often 2 at a time, but sometimes 4
Vesper6: Whole set.
Dr. No: whole set
javelin98: As a set
djlg: whole set. And if the car's half decently maintained, they'll all need replacing at the same time.
GuyHill: For every car I have I do something different
jttm: Set.
GrandpaDave: As I need them
skrutsch: whole set
Lord_Prussian: A whole set
chaddyboy_2000: Whole set.
skelebone: I usually purchase a whole set, though I do need to replace one now that has a blister.
CortexBomb: Whole set
Spielfreak: Usually 2 at a time, moving the ones formerly in the front to the rear, and placing the new ones in the front.
CDRodeffer: Whole set.
Randy Cox: Only as needed. So I never have a complete set of tires in really good condition.
