¿Question #4431?
Randy Cox: Homeschooling: positive or negative, in general?
ocdspectrum: In home circus.
0Shea0: I wuz homskooles
Clammy Clams: Negative. Socialization is the only real reason for school.
oldhoss: Negative if i have to pick one or the other. I think the social aspect of school is very important and you don't get that through youth sports or other organizations. However, I feel that for certain kids homeschooling is the right choice.
Phil Fleischmann: Positive. I know a number of kids who have been/are being home schooled. The results have been very good.
weed131: negative
Spirit of 70: Positive if done well. Though I do wonder how many parents honestly manage that.
brimstoner: negative for social connotations, positive for overall education quality. Generally speaking.
Woelf: It varies wildly depending on the parents, but on average, slightly positive.
sirjeyhmis: Positive until juniour/senior high?
Der Ubermolch: As a person who believes in the basic principles of economics, I am staunchly against the concept of home schooling because it flies in the face of comparative advantage.
slate43: Depends on the teacher.
scrub: STUPID.
meng: Negative.
cgund: Negative primarily. The movement is so utterly dominated by religious zealots who don't want their kids exposed to normal school subjects because they know the knowledge will cause the kids to think critically about religion. Yuck. But of course it could be done well.
vandemonium: Negative in general.
Narlgoth: Positive- Idiots could fail on their own rather then bring everyone down with them.
thesedarkdice: Positive.
Runes: Negative
Ammianus: negative
ellephai: Cool, I just realized I could answer a question twice. After seeing everyone else's answers, and noticing that the negatives seem to focus around lack of social life, I have to say that, first of all, it doesn't have to be that way. Homeschooling CAN be an isolating experience, certainly, but it doesn't HAVE to be. Some homeschoolers are involved in many activities and have lots of social contacts. In fact, my FLGS has a weekly homeschoolers gaming day! Really I think that the fact that we tend to think this says something about the common school experience. For most kids, the bubble of school is your whole social world. I think some homeschoolers are in a position to actually get a much broader view. But secondly, and more importantly, all the people who spoke on this topic seem to assume that the social interaction you get at school is a positive thing. Sadly, that's not always the case. If what a kid gets at school is bullying, ostracism, and abuse, they'd be better off at home. For some kids, homeschooling is a refuge from the nightmare that is the social order at school.
ZiggyZambo: neutral
wifwendell: Negative. No matter how good the teaching, difficult to replace the social interaction with other children.
Geosmores: Negative
WonderLlama: Negative. It'd be nice to avoid the politics, but there are just too many things you miss.
Azog: Positive, if the schooling parent is actually educated.
DHEK: Positive if done very well, otherwise generally negative.
jimv: Not a good idea, in general.
elirlandes: Negative. A disaster, a shame and a crime.
Chad Jensen: a bit of both, obviously
aleo09: posi
Gnarlythotep: It really depends on the parents.
POvidiusNaso: negative, but what do I know?
KentuckyKid: A mix. I'm not for it, myself, but it probably has its place.
produceguy1765: positive
dmomo: Depends on the Schooler!
Leo H: Negative. School teahces more than goes on in the classrooms.
Cut & Space: negative for social devellopment IMO
tdabomb: negative, kinda shuts the person out from the world
bigbadsteve: positive. it takes work, but its worth it
Cromaa: Positive
Helenoftroy: positive I think. I am still deciding whether we will or not. Public schools suck. I didn't learn much or enough.
deltabob: Negative - doesn't help build group dynamics
ronster0: I did not know that they taught being a General in home school
joebelanger: Positive. Way positive.
BeeCeeJay: negative... the social interaction that schools provide is essential to emotional growth.
Ebon Wendigo: Positive. I've known some people that were homeschooled and they are pretty sharp.
Peechy: Homeschooling is the perfect way to ruin a social life
pronoblem: negative
brainrob: -ve
korppu: negative
Reloaded: negative I would say...
hacksword: neutral
javelin98: Positive
fehrmeister: Very positive.
Timothius: Totally positive!!!
MochaKimono: I'm homeschooled. Definitely positive. And if someone says it's bad for my social life, they are incredibly ignorant.
Loquutus: Don't know
Tushratta: Positive.
arkibet: for the most part, negative. BUt it certainly isn't bad.
dietevil: Depends on who is doing it.
davebo: Positive
scriptorum: Positive, probably.
puffinge: negative
dakarp: I'd say negative, in general.
skrutsch: I don't think there's an in general answer to that. It really is an individual thing. I teach in public school, so I really do think there should be a good reason if somebody's going to homeschool. (besides the fact that they think public schools have a homosexual agenda.)
jtong77: Negative.
jellospike: positive
jttm: Negative
CDRodeffer: Positive if the parents know what they're doing. Very negative if they don't. Unfortunately, most of the parents who have the liberty of doing so don't know what they're doing.
Lord_Prussian: positive
Randy Cox: I'm pretty much against. I know there are a very few who are both qualified and will attempt to give their kids proper social stimulation. But most of the homeschoolers I've ever met just want to either have their kids work for them during the day (that's learning, folks) or keep them away from any secular activity.
Spielfreak: positive, but it's a tremendous undertaking.
skelebone: I'd probalby go positive, but it's important that homeschoolers are exposed to real social situations, so they don't go nuts when thrust into the "real" world.
chaddyboy_2000: I'll send my kids to public school.
CortexBomb: Positive. I think the public school system is an albatross for talented students, an anchor in the inner city, and is in general need of some serious help. If qualified people would rather instruct their children at home I'm all for it
