¿Question #4566?
puffinge: Please help me understand dresscodes. What do formal, semi-formal, etc. mean? If I'm going to a club like the 9:30 club in DC to see a reasonably prominent rock act, what is acceptable to wear? How about a show in a Las Vegas casino?

Woelf: Formal: Jacket, shirt, and tie. Semi-Formal: Nice pants, shirt with at least 2 buttons. Black Tie: Black tie (only)
Spirit of 70: Semi-formal equates to business casual. No need for a tie, but no jeans or short-sleaved uncollared shirts. For a show at a vegas casino, it depends on the casino. For many casinos, casual wear is fine, these days. For exclusive shows at the higher end casinos, it might be appropriate to go black-tie.
arkibet: black tie = tuxedo. formal = suit and tie. semi formal = no jacket required (but shirt, tie, slacks, dress shoes). Business Casual = collared shirt, slacks, nice shoes. Casual = anything relaxed and comfy, but don't look like a total slob. Informal = anything you want. Vegas is very informal. DC is probably casual.
BalladBlack: In my oppinion, go naked. Naked is the new formals.
Hendal: I only wear surf shirts, what do I know. What ever you want if you got $
Jeff Horger: Are you really asking about fashion on BGG? Oh my you are in trouble aren't you?
jkono: Formal = Wear a tuxedo; Semi-Formal = Wear half a tuxedo.
themagni: STOP. ASKING. ME. ON. DATES.
DHEK: Why don't you call up the club or the casino or whatever and ask? Duh!!!
elirlandes: Basically, avoid going ANYWHERE that insists on a dress code. Do you understand now?
aleo09: formal is dressy, to see a rock band jeans should be fine. vegas = jeans unless ur a VIP
sdonohue: I assume formal means coat and tie, semi means I can choose a tie. I don't know about the club scene.
pairofdicelost: I really like cheese. Especially on sandwiches.
woonklepuff: Shorts and a funny hat
Leo-T: From what I've observed, apparently jeans & a t-shirt are acceptable everywhere now
JonBen: ask a woman
zappothedude: You tell me, & we'll both know.
PsyJam: Formal = tie. Semi - formal = same shit, no tie.
brainrob: Never been to DC or Vegas so can't comment
Nekura: It depends on the region. "Casual" in California is different than in Illinois. Formal generally means tux. Semi-formal generally means tie.
MisterCranky: How about you look this junk up in Emily Post, you cheap bastard.
vampywife: formal means tux/evening gown. semi-formal means suit/nice dress. to go to a club, a nice shirt with jeans or khakis or a cute dress is acceptable, to go to a Vegas show, I'd go with slacks and a button-down shirt, maybe a tie, or a nice dress.
Shotmagnet: Its a code, stupid. You're meant to BREAK it!
SkyBry: Formal = tux. Semi-formal = dress shirt, slacks. No jeans. Casual = jeans. Slacker = anything else.
djlg: Wear what you like, as long as its clean & neat.
orodreth: A gentlemen's advice: It's always easier to be over-dressed and subsequently dress-down after arriving at an event, than it is to be under-dressed and try to act otherwise.
Beowulf: In DC, blue jeans, mock-T, black sports coat. In Vegas, a thong.
skrutsch: no clue
Loquutus: All I know is,you NEVER wear the shirt of the band you are going to see. Don't be that guy.
xscape: casual... vegas... probably a bit dressier.. .good luck with that
flyinghogfish: If it covers up your rude bits, you're just fine
puffinge: I'm never gonna figure all this out
erli: A shirt and pants and maybe shoes
scriptorum: Alright, here's what I do: Formal means nice suit and tie or tux. Semi-formal means suit, no tie necessary, possibly can do without the jacket. Semi casual means dockers and a collared shirt, loafers or nicer shoes. Casual means jeans, tee shirt, sneakers, and possibly shorts are all ok. Shorts are generally not ok when the context of the dress code is for business, but that depends on the company. A rock concert is casual, wear whatever is comfortable. If you want to be classy you can go semi-casual, but I think most others will be dressed casual. Likewise, Vegas is fairly casual. Some of the restaurants might want semi-casual to semi-formal wear, but a show, bah, it's Vegas, everyone wears shorts and looks like tourists.
Dorque: Silk shirt and slacks, comfortable boots. For Vegas, everybody goes nude.
edosan: Formal is wneh you go to the prom. Semi-formal is when you dress like a truck. Ba-dum-bum! Thank you, folks! I'll be here all week! Try the roast beef, it's fantastic!
jttm: As long as you wear underwear, I think you'll be fine...
dakarp: Generally, Formal means Tuxedo or possibly dark suit. Semi-formal is suit or sport jacket and tie. You can wear pretty much anything to the 9:30 club, I think. T-shirt and jeans should be fine, or something less casual, if you prefer. For a show in Las Vegas, I don't think I'd wear jeans or a t-shirt. At least khakis and a collared shirt (probably button-down) or nice sweater. But it's been a while since I've been to a Vegas show.
CortexBomb: I would assume formal means the kind of clothes you would wear to a board meeting. Semi-formal means office style wear at least (i.e.: button up shirt...)
Randy Cox: If you can't wear khakis like you'd wear to work, it ain't worth going to.
skelebone: I don't know what the 9:30 club is, but I'd go with khaki pants and a polo shirt, if you're concerned about apparel. For a LV show, slacks, and a button down shirt would probably be appropriate, but without a tie.
chaddyboy_2000: Formal = Suit or tux, Semi-Formal = Dress pants with a dress shirt w/ maybe a sport coat.
CDRodeffer: White tie means top-of-the-line white tuxedo and all the trimmings with a limo. Black tie is a normal tuxedo. Formal means either rent something that costs at least $100 per day or buy something that costs at least $500. Semi-formal is buy something that costs at least $200 (rentals usually not available). Were there published dress codes for these shows?
Spielfreak: Now you've got me imagining a puffin dressed like a penguin.
Lord_Prussian: I'm not much help here
