¿Question #4877?
Gialmere: Do you think that NASA should spend its money on unmanned space missions that yield plenty of science but little publicity, or manned missions that yield lots of publicity but very little science?
BOBBYCAN: Both. The manned missions lately don't yield much science because they're all low earth orbit missions.
ocdspectrum: Former. Always practical.
CathysBrain: Manned missions that get plenty of publicity AND produce a lot of science.
Jbrady: Unmanned space missions
weed131: unmanned
MisterCranky: This answer brought to you by Turkey Basters Anonymous.
amosmj: niether, cut it's funding.
Spirit of 70: I think there is a need for both.
Woelf: They need the occasional manned mission to hold the public's interest and keep their budget, but use the majority of their time and money on the unmanned missions.
Chris Page: I think NASA's budget should be doubled.
ricardofo: Yes. To improve science. If USA do not make scientific progress, other nations will do.
Deleted042515: Science!
cgund: It's a matter of balance.
Numskull: The first one.
Narlgoth: The high science/low publicity option, although knowing you Yanks you would prefer it the other way round! :- 1
aleo09: the 1st
krainer: Unmanned missions.
Boot2daHead: I think they should use the money to defend us against the aliens who keep coming here and making strange patterns in our corn and mutilating our cows.
jackolantern: Plenty of science, and just enough publicity to keep it going.
Keonyn: Unmanned missions, they go further, see more and we learn more as a result.
DHEK: Mostly on the science-yielding ones, though it must also spend money (though not so much) on publicity-type missions that yield little science. It's kinda like advertising. You need to do it, or you'll just end up with the best product but no one knows or cares about it.
POvidiusNaso: The first, which they've primarily gone with lately.
martybjsg: I think they should just gobs of money, we can make more if need be.
Leo-T: they need to do both
Doo Doo: Plenty of science
discoking7: nasa should spend its money on successful missions to keep public interest. come on, mars rover, what a disaster!
leslauber: Uh, the question is based on false premises and therefore no answer can be meaningful.
arkibet: right now, we need the publicity
Dorque: 1
joebelanger: Unmanned.
CherryPie: Unmanned that yield plenty of science.
odie73: How about spending money on the most unexplored parts of our earth - the oceans?
jellospike: Whaterver is best to further the space program
kjweimer: Unmanned for science knowledge.
jasta6: unmanned
bigbadsteve: unmanned
SteveK2: unmanned scientific missions, but there'll be a lot of squealing if some other country does a non-orbital manned mission.
LemonyFresh: the former
Timothius: The former.
Adiegirl: I'm for science all the way.
Loquutus: The second, in order to provide funding for the first. In a perfect world, pure research would sustain itself.
billgoode: Missions that provide usefull scientific data.
pellitieri: Ideally, on missions that produce plenty of science, manned or not. Manned missions are necessary, in my opinion. Please remember that many of the shuttle missions did not have high publicity. Few paid attention to Columbia prior to its failed landing.
cerulean: Both are equally important. The manned space program has generated lots of useful medical knowledge.
mgringo: Both. And we should spend a _lot_ more money on the space program.
Nonamnon: manned missions
mats-k: Unmanned missions that yield lots of science and publicity.
puffinge: You expect me to answer this un-prefixed question?
javelin98: Equal amounts of both. Publicity keeps the tax dollars rolling in.
chaddyboy_2000: I don't care.
jttm: Don't really care.
skelebone: I'd rather take science over publicity for my tax dollar.
CDRodeffer: The latter are necessary for the former, even though the former are more valuable overall.
Lord_Prussian: The former, although ultimately manned missions are going to be necessary I think
CortexBomb: Obviously the unmanned flights
