WatchmanX2000: Ah, Valerie... You know, sometimes these dichotomy questions are just annoying, but coming from you. I'm a free will type person and believe all we are and do comes from our own choices not because someone out there has set the hand of fate in our path. However opportunity is the hand of fate and fate can bring in some interesting options for people willing to take risks and step up to the challenges. I believe in being my own person but seeing that influences from people and events I experience do have an impact, however small that may be. It seems to me everyone has a moment or two where they think the fates are piling on, but you know... if one takes that view all the time, you end up despondent, dissatisfied and unhappy. It's much better to grin and overcome than to lay down in a corner to take what's dumped on you.
Randy Cox: Free will
gmcash: free will
hjdploeg: Free will
Bakelite: Free will.
Norrmeister: Free Determinism!
shteev: I don't believe the two are mutually exclusive. If future times somehow already 'exist' somewhere, then your future decisions have already been taken... but the person who took those decisions is you. Albeit, you from the future. You can argue that you from the future ISN'T you, but then we're opening up a whole new can of worms...
jredd: The answer is irrelevant. Fate may be determined, but it is not known to us. One must make one's own decisions and accept responsibility for them.
