sdownin: I would join the Confederates, because I believe in their stated causes. Slavery was a red herring. With the Industrial Revolution in full swing, slavery was on a path to ending with machinery providing the cheaper labor. Even Lincoln himself said he couldn't care less about slavery. The American Civil War was fought because protectionist tariffs and taxes were imposed by the Federal government at the behest of and benefiting the Northern Industrialists which imposed undue financial burden on the poorer, agrarian Southern States. The Confederate States believed the Declarations of Independence – “…whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it…” Lincoln was little more than a petty tyrant, trying, by force of arms, to prevent Southern States from exercising their natural right to secede from a government they no longer consented to being a part of. Yes, I grew up in a Union state, too.

Bearcat89: I am sure that the misconception that the CSA supported slavery and the USA was against slavery is driving this toward an overwhelming Union victory. The US Civil War was NOT about slavery, but rather about limiting the power of Federal government to interfere in the affairs of State government.

HBGlover: Interesting question. Obviously, the Union was on the higher moral ground. But I do have ancestors who fought for the South. Therefore if I joined the Union I'd take the risk of killing my own great-grandfather, preventing myself from ever being born! So I guess I'd fight for the land of cotton.
