¿Question #887?
ejmowrer: Is the color that I think of as 'Green' really the same color that you think of as 'Green' or are we seeing two entirely different colors, but were just trained to call them the same name?
Damjon: Iy depends on the number of cones you have in your eyes. If you have more then me, then the green I see is far less complex then what you would see. In general, assuming the same nos of cones, the green you see is close to the green I see.
Apocryphile: What are you - a solopsist?
Felimid: This green is grasser than that green.
callow: No. It's the same. Next question.
gregwebster: Whoa far out man. Pass me another.
Woelf: That's purple. Not because we're seeing the same color differently, but because you don't know your colors.
xlorp: Green:Color as Chicken:Taste
Straight To Hell: I see everything in black and white and beige.
Blott: Green is in the eye of the beholder.
mathguy6189: different colors
Polgara: yes.
Corpsified: Good question, for the sake of believing in the "weird" I will say that we all see different colors, but have learned to call them the same thing.
Hector Vortac: Yeah, I've pondered the same thing. But I got a definitive answer. I always play green pieces. One time this guy say 'I'll take green'; sure enough he took the pieces I wanted.
puffinge: they are close enough to the same to call them the same
aleo09: could be
Norson: It´s the same color.
sorewinner: We should start calling it 'That fresh grass color' or 'The color of leaves in summer'...On second thought, let's keep calling it 'Green'
kingmaker fan: There is only one Green, the Kelly Green of the Oakland A's!
DHEK: I think it's more likely the first case. Unless you're colorblind, that is.
PopeBrain: my green is prettier than your green
Butterbane: You are very insightful, young padawan
StormKnight: Either way, someone else is sure to pick the green pieces first.
tagger418: I have thought that same thing about a thousand times!!
dkwd: Not sure what color you are thinking of as 'green' - how do we know that you aren't divergent?
bigbadsteve: POW!!! you just blew my mind
SisyphusX: Until we discover telepathy, we can never know.
interhawk: yes
Cromaa: A
Sideburn: objectively they are the same color, but whe could very well conceive them differently in our minds (funny you should ask, because I've been wondering for years...)
l7productions: Trained to call them the same name... thank you for asking this!
Dorque: Yup. Green is a number.
Embark: Well since I am color blind, I can relate to this question. I see colors differently than the majority of people do. I don't know the answer to your question though.
scriptorum: They probably appear slightly different to each of us, and to a few of us, largely different.
Shotmagnet: half of one, six dozen of the other
Avatar_69: Probably the latter. It doesn't matter as long as we agree it's green
ralpheous: not entirely different, but we probably do percieve them slightly differently.
xianrotide: I didn't read past the first line.
Chris Page: We're all on the same wavelength.
brainrob: We'll never know
bekudno: Impossible to say. For that matter, it's impossible to say if you are conscious at all.
tipigi: I'm pretty sure the green crayon that I had as a kid was the same green that you had.
BiscuitTheCat: we are seeing the same frequencies reflected. but we may be interpreting them differently
davedanger: yup
POvidiusNaso: I've always wondered this myself.
vetinari7878: Hard to say, but probably they're the same.
MochaKimono: Probably.
Yollege: Are you a man? Because then all greens are green.
motoyugota: Both
bjonenplota: Yes, it is indeed so-
Mike A: I'm colorblind, so I doubt they are the same.
Cerebus: Yes.
Donkey Thong: yes
Culvan: Evidence strongly suggests that they're really the same colour, though the definition of 'seeing' and 'colour' gets pretty fuzzy when you get down to the level of fundamental consciousness and brain functioning.
notquitekarpov: Good one. Suspect we cannot tell.
RDReilly: It's probably pretty similar. No real reason to think otherwise.
matthew.marquand: oooo somebody else that thinks like me. I've asked this question before and people look at me like I'm an alien.
sourwyrm: it's the same color
CharlieWonka: They are alike
Lord_Prussian: That's hard to say. How does green look to you?
ssmooth: Have you been saving this question since you were eight?
skrutsch: I've always wondered that. The same for scents and tastes.
Tailuje: And my conception of art and beauty is different from your conception because the colors I see as complementary are different from the colors you see as .... woah.
deadkenny: Trained to call them the same
leece: Too make things worse, the Japanese word for blue is the same as their word for green, they don't distinguish between the two. This could get really existential and subjective, you know. I wouldn't let it worry you.
hobbes_inc: The phyics same same color, the philosphy says trained
Belash: Green is good
Metaphora: Actually, we'd be seeing three different shades, as both my eyes see color differently.
Basilius: dude - I have been all over that question in the past. and I don't know that there's any way to find out.
KnobDoctor: Doesn't matter, as colors are defined ostensively.
melissa: Probably the latter
snoozefest: no way to know
jimchris: We are all just trained animals.
King_Custard: You are just paranoid
heli: it's very difficult to say without the ability to calibrate brains
nexttothemoon: They are exactly, completely and totally the same. Chi, Karma and the eternally wise peanut that hovers over us all insures it is so.
Bearcat89: Way to deep for this crowd.
steadym: The color is the color, as defined by the light's measurable wavelength.
RandallPeek: It's the same.
fanboy: it's the same
2amp: i'm color blind
solove: Yep and what if C.A.T. really spelled Dog? Pass it over.
Edbryan: two entirely different colors, my green would be your blue if you were seeing through my eyes
Randy Cox: I've always figured that we're seeing different hues, though we see the same wavelengths. On a related topic, what happens if you raise a kid to call a door "window" and a car "mop", for instance?
WasQ: As an Illustrator I can say you that yes...
Oborro: its entirley impossible to tell... But we are seeing the same wave frequencies, so how our brain interperates the colours is not important
AlorielLelyn: That depends on your eyes. It's likely that it appears differently to you compared to me, but similar to other people on both of our accounts.
filnari: Too deep.
tragicpoet: Depends are you colorblind?
Debate: We're seeing the same color... unless you're color blind
Ryno8: different but trained to be same
gnomehome: Are you a Daltonist ?
manowarplayer: The same.
BaSL: you'ra colorblind?
GuyHill: lets do an experiment shall we?
Blackwind: no...color is nothing more than the reflection of cerain wavelenghts
m_r_tyler: It is clear that the two of us think differently, so it would not surprise me if we saw things differently as well.
Cardinal Fang: Same color
MisterCranky: They are exactly the same. The electricity in your brain=the electricity in my brain, thanks to the wonder of having almost exactly the same set of natural elements with which to work! So, when your optic nerve is excited by the signals generated by your retina's cute little puppies, the same basic mechanism kicks into high gear and floods GREEN into your skull. Unless you are wearing rose colored glasses. Then the whole thing is off.
CDRodeffer: They're probably close to one another.
DangerMouse: Good question!
Steve Leach: yes
geberus: the former
chard_hammer: I believe that we have been trained to call them the same name and that everyone’s perception of them are a little bit different. You can see that this is true when teaching art to older kids. They will put two shades of color together and think they look good but to you they don’t.
jens_hoppe: Nah, it's the same...
djlg: Within a reasonable degree of variation, we're thinking of the same light wavelengths.
fsumarc: shades of green
djflippy: Yes...
chaddyboy_2000: We're probably both seeing gree.
shumyum: One more reason it ain't easy....
darthcliff: Mr. Green is in the Ballroom with the revolver . . .
jaredh: probably two different things.
dakarp: It is the same color.
Aldie: I've thought the same thing.
louiseh: What do you mean by color in this context? If you and I both consistently refer to items as green and we agree then that is the meaning of green (a la Wittgenstein)
netfilterz: My lords I have invented the purest Green!
Shakar: It depends if your have the same quality eyes as mine.
jttm: Same spectrum of light (wave frequency), but maybe different shades.
BobDodgerBlue: There can be only 1 Green
PghArch: It is the same.
ynnen: Great question, and I often think this is the case for a great many learned practices -- although there are enough consistencies in color association that our interpretations are probably fairly close.
skelebone: We're trained to call them the same, but we're all only seeing different shades of the same thing.
alkaiser: Yes
ValJor: Not entirely different, no, but the range of "greenness" is different for each person.
Ludocrazy: We're seeing the same color
Pseudo Nymh: Point at something and ask, 'Is this Green?' and we'll find out.
ScottBecker: It kind of depends on what you mean by entirely different, but I'll say yes - they're the same.
CortexBomb: All common sense says our perceptions of colour as such should be functionally similar. Now, on a more subtle level the concept of ,,green" is open ended enough to allow for many, many possible interpretations to occur. If we were to look at the exact same shade I think we would perceive the same colour, but we definitely do not imagine the same colour when someone says ,,green" as a concept any more than we all think of the same ,,tree"...
