RandallPeek: No. So what if they aren't buff barbarian types, and seem to be pretty open with their emotions? Since when is being emotionally receptive and sensitive a bad thing? They came from an agrarian society without a cultural bias toward cynicism, so they tended toward a genuine emotional kinship with one another. I applaud the choice of the screenwriters to take this approach rather than pandering to the masses with a deconstructivist approach with self-aware hobbits.

leece: This is actually where the film is true to the book, and what they were doing in the book is true to the way social mores were at the time. They were all a bunch of sensitive new age guys really and they really had this thing about brotherly love - not sexual, just the pure emotion...of course in this enlightened age, it comes across as 'acting gay'. Sheesh, and we're supposed to be more tolerant in this age.
