puffinge: If I say "I'll see you next Thursday" on Monday, 5/16, when will I see you? Suppose I say it on Friday, 5/13?

Woelf: If it's Monday, "next Thursday" is the one after "this coming Thursday", so 5/26 not 5/19. If you say "next Thursday" on Friday, it points to the one six days later (5/19). The cutoff when "next Thursday" becomes "this Thursday" is the weekend, specifically the Sunday immediately preceeding it. In other words, any day in the current week is "this [day]", while any day in the following week is "next [day]".
Hector Vortac: Technically I suppose it means 5/26. To avoid confusion I never use that expression.
Cringing Dragon: You probably wouldn't, as our calendar has only 12 months, not 16 or 13 as your dates imply.

jcarvin: definition: Next = nearest. However, "next Thursday" is usually meant to mean the Thursday after THIS COMING Thursday for some strange reason!
DHEK: When you say "next" before a day, it DOES NOT mean that "next week". It means exactly the same as when used in any other context. So, "next Thursday" means the next Thursday that will come, even if it is this week's Thursday. In other words, if you say it on Monday, you mean the Thursday of that same week. If you say it on Friday, you mean the Thursday of the coming week. But don't worry if you got mixed up by this - it's a common mistake.
arkibet: Not the Thursday of this week, but of the next week. Again, on Friday, I'd say, "Not this upcoming Thursday, but the next Thursday."

skelebone: Next Thursday is the one after the one upcoming, so on 5/16 it is 5/26, and on 5/13 it is still 5/26. To indicate 5/19, you need to say "I'll see you Thursday" in both cases.
