¿Question #220833?
PolarDad: SERIOUS QUESTION. This concerns a 26 year debate between my wife and I. I will not tell you my side so as not to sway you. QUESTION-Do you butter your toast before or after you toast it?

imyourskribe: After typically, but if the butter is too cold to spread without tearing the bread up I will usually put a pat on the toasted bread and put it back in the toaster for a few seconds to warm it up (I use a toaster oven)
mr3d: The glasses are too slippery when buttered pre-toast.
rayzg: Isn't re-baking bread with additional fat in the oven (i.e. adding butter to bread, then "toasting" it in the oven) considered croutons?
mattomaw: How can you butter your TOAST before you toast it? Do you toast toast?
RealGuest: After, if it's a traditional upright toaster and you're not a monster
Tim%20Synge: After. Anyone who says otherwise is completely wrong and should apologise profusely for holding a contrary view.
Woelf: This depends entirely on what you're toasting it with. In a toaster oven, a regular oven, a pan, or any other horizontal situation, butter it first so the butter toasts into it (Bonus: You can butter it again after it comes out. Really, you can.) If you're putting it in a standard toaster, or any other vertically-oriented toasting situation, butter it after so the butter doesn't melt and run off while toasting.
magikaru: Assuming you are toasting in a toaster, it’s gotta be after. If you are toasting on a frying pan or oven, then before.
pricero1: After!
RavingLoon: After, if you are eating it as toast, however if you are using the bread for a sandwich, you butter it before.
Jedadeana: Toast is after, but garlic bread is always before (and with a generous amount of garlic powder on top of the butter)
PolarDad: Yes, the after-butterer would toast the bread in an oven rather than the stand up toaster.
oriecat: After, of course. The only way I can see before working is if you are using a toaster oven and the bread lies flat instead of upright like in a normal toaster. But it still sounds weird.
TomTi89: After. Won't the butter just, like, melt and slide off the toast if you add it first?
