Ruesailmana: @Real Guest; what Inkedad says is the most advised starting book and apparently also advised by Pratchett himself. The first two books are interesting once you know the series, but they don't do justice to the series at all, and to be honest, I am still not a fan of those two books. There's an interesting schematic you can find on wikipedia: it shows you with which book to begin, depending on the theme you like.

RealGuest: I've only tried to read the Colour of Magic. Tried. Not succeeded. It seems like the sort of book I'd enjoy, but for some reason, I couldn't get into it. I'll try again sometime I'm sure. Do you have a better idea of where to start?
MABBY: My favorite was Mort, but the obvious starting place-- to get the colour and tone of every book that follows-- is the first one. Colour of Magic.
RavingLoon: If they just want something to casually read, I'd direct them to Amazing Maurice, my personal favorite. Not as good a choice though if they want to start reading it as a comprehensive storyline though.
