Woelf: Can you cite any examples from history where a website or user interface was "upgraded" or changed in a significant way that was viewed as an actual improvement by the vast majority of the user base?

Grimsalt: Not really, no. Big changes have always been met with harsh resistance and criticism, which is partially why everything updates all the time. Non-web UIs I can think of : Windows XP, Ubuntu, Android 2.0, PS3, Fire & Axe 2e by Asmodee, Condottiere 2e by Z-Man.
mattomaw: How about Oyster cards on London Transport?
oriecat: I'm sure they are out there, but considering where we are and what they regularly do to us, it's hard to think of any right now.
