¿Question #4214?
POvidiusNaso: What sci-fi or fantasy author who has written something in the last five yeras, is the best? (Please exclude Bujold, Martin, & Hobb)
BOBBYCAN: Iain Banks. I miss that guy.
Shleeg: well, if you're gonna exclude them, we have NOTHING to discuss. good DAY sir. (who are those guys, anyone?)
Spirit of 70: Wolfe.
rongammer: ?
Woelf: I like Terry Brooks.
pooterbug: Terry Pratchett, although my husband would say Jack Vance!
ricardofo: Gene Rodenderry
Head_Rat: None of them.
Harkonnen13: John Birmingham
aleo09: don't know
ZeroZilla: Well, my personal favorite is William Gibson. Second would be Orson Scott Card, but in order to appreciate his recent work, you'd probably want to catch the original book (Ender's Game), which is more than 5 years back. Btw, if you're interested (which I'm guessing you're not) the 'sequels' to Ender's Game aren't worth the time and effort it takes to read them. Only with "Ender's Shadow" a re-telling of the original novel, does Card get back on-form. Anything by Gibson is, at the very least, excellently written.
jredd: I don't read very much sci-fi or fantasy, and even less current stuff. Have you read Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen books yet? And outside the genre, have you read "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and The End of the World" by Haruki Murakami? This last one is probably cheating, but Stanislaw Lem, who has written in the past five years, wrote great sci-fi in the '60s, '70s and '80s.
scriptorum: Stephenson
Mease19: Goerge R. R. Martin
DHEK: I don't know... I'm sure there are many, but I just don't read that many or really keep track on who wrote what.
darcyj2: Ted Dekker or Orson Scott Card...tough choice there.
POvidiusNaso: Probably Neal Stephenson or Steven Brust.
mpw182: Terry Goodkind
sdonohue: I don't read sci-fi or fantasy much.
Geosmores: Lackey
Ebon Wendigo: Terry Pratchett
netfilterz: Depends on your definitions of the genres, but Neil Gaiman has written Neverwhere, American Gods and now Anansi Boys which are pretty good modern day fantasy in my opinion.
TamiWhitsett: Donaldson
mlanza: Terry Brooks
Nekura: Close tie between William Gibson and Jonathan Lethem
xlorp: Cherryh
Chris Page: Connie Willis. (Honorable mention: Guy Kay, Terry Pratchett, and, yes, Bujold.)
Loquutus: booger
Beowulf: Neal Stephenson
brainrob: Iain M Banks
philewis: Terry Pratchett
Fawkes: Neil Gaiman.
Killermyth: I'd have to say Bill Cliton on his new book, now THATS fantasy.
ZombyDawg: Stephen R. Donaldson
javelin98: David Weber
ssmooth: J.K. Rowling or Daniel Pinkwater
matthew.marquand: Orson Scott Card

Lord_Prussian: I'm drawing a blank. Maybe Feist.
skelebone: F if I know.
CortexBomb: Gaiman
CDRodeffer: I can't think of any greats in the past 5 years. Popularity doesn't equal greatness.
chaddyboy_2000: I don't read.
