¿Question #4459?
Cavedog_pdx: If the United States didn't drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, how would World War II have turned out differently?

pricero1: I think World War III would have been different in that circumstance.
the manatee: Taking Japan would have been another Saipan, but to the nth degree.
Caerid: There would have been a lot more dead Americans
Nahain: More dead soldiers, less dead civilians.
Jatoha: a lot more americans would have died, a lot fewer japanese
Woelf: It would have lasted anywhere from several more months upwards of another year, and the entire island of Japan would have become a bloodbath.
MisterCranky: Mothra would never have been born, therefore lactose intolerance would have risen to epic proportions.
jhearne: Longer.
paattymaton: same result, longer battles
WonderLlama: I expect not that much.
ironsizide: Probably
DHEK: Probably more from the Allied forces would have died and the war would have lasted a bit longer. But I think the end was near already for the Axis powers. The bombs just hastened the end.
White Stone: Extended fighting in the Pacific, possibly ending with a truce of some sorts in which Japan would keep control of a number of islands.
Runes: Probably not
Cmot Dribbler: i might not have been born.
POvidiusNaso: There would have been many more US and Japanese military casualties and a helluva lot fewer Japanese civilian casualties, with Japan finally signing a peace treaty at some point in 1946 or '47.
maumau: It would be the same... The japs were already on the carpet...
Kazin: No change in outcome.
Leo-T: A LOT more US troops would've died in the invasion - including probably my father. His unit was preparing to invade when the bombs were dropped.
Dryfus: lots more people would have died taking japan
GrimJester: No Godzilla.
scriptorum: The US would have blockaded and then invaded Japan. The war would have dragged on for much longer. More US soldiers would have died.
Capitaine Grappin: The Japanese were going to surrender, so there would be more people alive today
them: Well, if the US didn't, it's unlikely someone else would, for one thing..
karstenengelmann: there would have been another 100,000 US casualties, and lots of Japanese. Then, in the 1950's the US would probably have used a lot of them in the Korean war - and turned Communist China into a smoking hole.
Beelzebub: More Japanese and Americans killed.
vampywife: it could have, but there is not way to know without going back in time and changing it
brainrob: It wouldn't - Japan was ready to surrender before the first A-bomb but the US refused to talk.
Cromaa: The Nazis might have won
thoia: The US would have dropped the bomb on Berlin. Come on, certainly the technology would be used just the target would change.
Avatar_69: The US would have had to invade Japan with more deaths than were caused by the bomb
BeatPosse: Lot more dead people, lot less Godzilla movies.
vetinari7878: It would have lasted for some more years. Then it would have all depended on how many gains (territorial and political) the Russians would have had in the meantime.
Helenoftroy: Everyone wouldn't be seeing US as a crazed bully. But the war would have ended anyway in our favor.
jasta6: With the ferocious battles on the preceding islands, like Iwo Jima, they projected the war would last another year or two with hundred of thousands dead. Including U.S. and Japanese lives. Though devastating to the Japanese, and remember they started this with the U.S., it most likely saved lives on both sides. Also, It is the commander-in-chiefs job, during war time, to defeat the ENEMY with as minimal loss of lift to his forces. The A-Bomb did just that!
Platinum Dragon: It would have gone a little longer.
Loquutus: It would have lasted another five years and cost millions more lives to occupy Japan.
bigbadsteve: well, you might be cavdog_san instead of cavedog_pdx...
Gecko23: Who knows?
korppu: They'd have dropped the bombs somwhere else
ZombyDawg: The Soviet Union would have ended up controlling more of Southeast Asia. There might have been more conflicts after WWII similar to Korea and Vietnam.
Favre4MVP: It probably would have been something involving an umbrella, a can of peanut oil, and a hermit crab.
page_fault: More dead US soldiers, more wide spread destruction of Japan, but US victory wouldn't be in doubt.
Otterdance: Not much. But the Cold War might have been a bit 'hotter'.
ValJor: Millions more would have died (the Japanese were ready to defend the motherland to the last man). It would have been brutal, much more than with the bombs
jttm: A lot of people would still be alive
e.c.r.: no
chaddyboy_2000: I have no idea. Maybe the planet would be ruled by apes.
Cavedog_pdx: Actually Michael the estimated Japanese casualties would have been well over 5 million rather than the 300,000 that were killed at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
mrbeankc: My grandfather would perhaps have died in the invasion of mainland Japan for one thing.
CDRodeffer: China would be very different today, and the Korean and Vietnam wars most likely wouldn't have happened at all. Hawaii would not be a US territory, and Indonesia would not be predominantly Islamic. The Soviet Union, however, would probably have lasted longer than it did.
skelebone: If we had come to an armistace instead, there could have been longstanding aggression, and they may have sided with the Soviets in the Cold War.
Lord_Prussian: Probably an invasion of Japan would have been necessary and costly
CortexBomb: There would have been many fewer dead Japanese, slightly more dead Americans. The allies had the Japanese supply line basically shut off on the mainland anyway
