arkibet: It's quite simple. The basic nature of any animal is Eat, Sleep, and Reproduce. In order to eat, man creates things to help him eat. And anything that makes that eating better is good. Man generally needs no help sleeping, but alcohol (an eating enhancement) was created to help passing out early. And lastly, everywhere you look man has created something for reproduction.

ssmooth: One of the small puzzles in the book of Genesis is what it means that man is "created in God's image." It seems doubtful that man, who wears a billion different faces on this planet, actually looks physically like the ineffable supreme Being and original Impulse who gave light to the universe. It is perhaps poetic but appealing nonetheless to suppose that the "image" of God we reflect is that Impulse to create: that the Creator has made creators of us all.

funkhauser: In the beginning, Man created simply to survive: building shelter and tools were necessary for his survival. I suspect that this activity, over thousands of years, began to take on a cultural dimension, and, as technology increased and there was more leisure time, the arts (and games!) began to fulfill the same cultural niche that more utilitarian creations had filled in the past. But I'm no anthropologist.
